| LOVE SONG FOR BOBBY LONG is not your ordinary Hollywood movie. It's more like book that a class of English majors could spend hours drooling over. It has the classic story structure, but the plot is as much about New Orleans and the people who live there as it is about the story. If you've been to New Orleans, you'll probably fall in love with this movie. If you haven't, you're more likely to think it sucks. It doesn't, though. It's an epic poem, an elegy, or a splendid sonnet written about New Orleans that is elegantly - almost lovingly - translated to film by Shainee Gabel. (Talk about your unexpected bold of lightning from deep left field!) Based on a magazine story written by Capps, it includes music written (and performed in the movie) by his son! That, alone, testifies to the whole family-like nature of this film that few people in this country will be able to appreciate, enjoy, or applaud. Shainee Gabel pulled a huge, muscle-bound rabbit out of a very small hat with this impressive (in numerous ways) movie. Kudos to everyone involved! This one's a grand slam in a very smooth, eloquent, and understated way that only gets better with repeated viewings. Thanks !!! | ||
