Lollapalooza Line-Up Attracts Criticism For Lack Of Gender Diversity

Lollapalooza

Social media has reacted with dismay to the announcement of the 2018 line-up for Lollapalooza Festival, with no female musicians appearing on the bill until the fourth line of the poster.

The Chicago music festival announced its annual line-up on Wednesday (March 21st), revealing that Arctic Monkeys, Jack White, The Weeknd and Bruno Mars would be the headliners for the four-day event in the city’s Grant Park in August.

However, many onlookers were quick to point out that none of the first three lines of artists announced on the poster were female, with it taking until the fourth line until the likes of Chvrches, St. Vincent and Dua Lipa to be cited, with former Fifth Harmony star Camila Cabello appearing on the fifth line.

Ten years ago today (27OCT16) Amy Winehouse released her second album Back to Black, which was to become her final record following her untimely death in 2011. The follow-up to her debut Frank was a critical and commercial success around the world, making singer-songwriter Winehouse a household name and thrusting her into the limelight. It topped the charts in the star's native Britain and reached number two in the U.S. Lead single Rehab became her only top 10 hit in America. The hugely personal album, produced by Mark Ronson and Salaam Remi, also spawned tracks You Know I'm No Good, Back to Black, Tears Dry on Their Own and Love Is a Losing Game. In 2008 it won Best Pop Vocal Album at the Grammy Awards and Rehab was named Record of the Year and Song of the Year. She won five of her six nominations but was unable to attend and perform at the ceremony as her visa was denied while she was seeking treatment for drug addiction. Sales of Back to Black surged after her death, aged 27, with the album even returning to the number one in some European countries. As of late 2015, it had sold 3.59 million copies in the U.K., making it the 13th best-selling album of all time in the country. ** Amy Winehouse performs at Lollapalooza Featuring: Amy Winehouse performs at Lollapalooza Where: Lollapalooza, Illinois, United States When: 05 Aug 2007

Lollapalooza has sold out of three-day general tickets. Got that? No more tickets. Which is a shame, considering that one hell of a line-up has just been announced including Eminem, Kings Of Leon and Outkast. More than 100 bands and artists will perform on eight stages at Grant Park - and there's still an opportunity to see some of your favorite bands.

One-day passes to the extravaganza are still available, though, of course, it means that you need to be pretty selective with who you're wanting to see perform. One-day passes are pretty reasonably priced at $100 - which is pretty damn good considering the amount of bands you're going to see.

"If they pull the plug on this song, you'll have to keep on singing," ordered The Cure's Robert Smith, preparing to play 'Boys Don't Cry' at the end of an ecstatically-received, hit-filled set. The British New Romantics showed that despite mainstream's music current trend for dubstep and electro, the punk roots of music will always hold dear for fans who can still identify with the frontman's penchant for melancholic ballads, backcombed hair and blood red lipstick.

The Cure Showed Their Ability To Still Draw An Enthusiastic Crowd.

Rob Carroll at Plan!tNorthwest described the rockers set as "a fitting headliner to bring Lollapalooza in for a soft landing" with minimal interaction between band and crowd , whilst The Guardian vow that "Robert Smith's ultra-expressive face gives us the most passion and raw emotion from any performer we've seen over the past three days."

Lollapalooza 2013: The Best New Bands Worth Checking Out

Lollapalooza Disclosure DIIV Smith Westerns Wilco Daft Punk Drowners Foals The Cure Phoenix Nine Inch Nails

You, being a seasoned festival-goer, will know that it’s Lollapalooza 2013 in Chicago’s Grant Park this weekend (August 2 – 4, 2013), which promises to play host to some of the biggest acts in the world as well as showcasing the most exciting and innovate new bands on the planet. And that’s what we’re here to concentrate on: the young, fresh and ready to impress.

It seems a long, long time since Disclosure’s first single Offline Dexterity, though the British electronic duo have gone from strength to strength in recent years and finally released their debut album, Settle, on PMR Records on June 2, 2013.It was met with both commercial and critical success, including a score of 9.1 from the notoriously picky musos at Pitchfork – no mean feat.

Sure, we’d rather see Disclosure in a club - perhaps in the early hours of the morning – though Lollapalooza-goers will have to settle for 6pm at The Grove, on Friday (August 2, 2013). Saying that, both Guy and Howard will be DJ’ing at The Mid club in Chicago’s West Town from 10pm on Friday.
