Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina: The Netflix Series Vs. The Original

Kiernan Shipka Netflix Lucy Davis Miranda Otto Michelle Gomez

More than two decades after 'Sabrina the Teenage Witch' first aired, she's returning to our screens in a brand new original Netflix series entitled 'Chilling Adventures of Sabrina'. Be warned though, Sabrina fans, the new show is certainly not for the faint-hearted.

If you didn't already know, the 90s series was based on the Archie Comics series of the same name; the same universe in which the new series creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa's 'Riverdale' exists. 'Chilling Adventures' is therefore more true to the comics, with the setting being in nearby Greendale as opposed to Westbridge.

There Are Currently No Plans For 'The Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina' To Crossover With 'Riverdale'

When it was revealed Sabrina (the Teenage Witch) would be getting her own show, based on the Archie Comics series 'The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina', fans immediately jumped to the conclusion that it would be airing on The CW alongside 'Riverdale'. The two shows will take place within the same universe and so, following the major success 'Riverdale' saw, it appeared to be the right conclusion to take. Then, Netflix revealed they'd commissioned 'Sabrina' for two seasons.

Though it was a strange turn in events, it does mean that the usual boundaries in place for a television network won't be there for 'Sabrina' when it makes its way onto the streaming service. There were fans however who then wondered whether or not a crossover between 'Sabrina' and 'Riverdale' would take place.

Why 'The Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina' Moved To Netflix From The CW

Following the reveal that Kiernan Shipka would be taking on the titular role in upcoming Netflix original series 'The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina' - based on the Archie Comics graphic novel of the same name - comes news from Mark Pedowitz on exactly why the show was taken by the streaming platform, instead of airing alongside the show from which it has spawned, 'Riverdale', on The CW.

When it was revealed Netflix would be hosting the show, the company revealed that they had already ordered two separate seasons of 'Sabrina', totalling 20 episodes. With a dark tone similar to 'Rosemary's Baby' expected to run through it, the series should be allowed to break down any boundaries that would usually surround it on television in its home.

When it was announced Sabrina the Teenage Witch would be coming back to television, fans of the original series got very excited indeed. Though it'll be completely different to the series that ran from 1996 to 2003 with Melissa Joan Hart in the titular role, just the mention of the character's name was enough to get a lot of people jumping for joy.

This time round, the series is called 'The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina', and will be based on the stories told in the Archie Comics comic books of the same. Taking place in Greendale and in the same universe as The CW series 'Riverdale', the series was first expected to be picked up on the same network, but Netflix bought the rights for two seasons and so, the series will start there.

When Marnie Was There Review

Very Good

Japan's Studio Gibli has been responsible for some of the finest animated movies in recent decades, from 2003's Oscar-winning Spirited Away to last year's beautiful The Tale of the Princess Kaguya. Now adapted by Disney with a starry Western voice cast, their films are reaching a wider audience. And this remarkably moving drama shows how complex an animated movie should be, skilfully grappling with grown-up themes through a child's perspective.

The story comes from the Joan G. Robinson novel about Anna (voiced by Hailee Steinfeld in the English-language version), a 12-year-old who lives in Sapporo with her foster mother Yoriko (Geena Davis). But Anna isn't like the other giggly girls at school, and after an asthma attack, she moves to the countryside to live with Aunt Setsu and Uncle Kiyomasa (Grey Griffin and John C. Reilly). They give her plenty of space to explore the area, and when she spots an abandoned seaside mansion, she is unexpectedly drawn to it, befriending Marnie (Kiernan Skipka), the free-spirited girl who lives there. Anna understands that Marnie is an imaginary friend, then is surprised to find Marnie's diary hidden behind a bookshelf in the rambling house.

The twisty plot incorporates a range of elements that keep the audience off-balance: Is this a ghost story? Is Anna mentally unstable because of her difficult background? But the film is much deeper than that, and as Anna takes a fiercely original journey to self-discovery, the film touches on all kinds of resonant themes. For example, Anna struggles with her self-image, never believing that she's a talented artist, although she clearly is. This has left her feeling like no one else likes her either. So it's both fascinating and moving to watch her blossoming relationships with both the young girl Sayaka (Ava Acres) and the older woman Hisako (Vanessa Williams) who paints by the seaside. Both offer emotional insight into Anna's story.

One And Two Trailer

Zac and Eva are two children closed off from the entire world, they live with their parents on a remote farm with little communication and little outside influence. Kate Winslet may have given birth to her baby boy just three months ago, but you’d never have been able to tell, so fabulous did she look in her floor length red Safiyaa London gown. Bear Blaze has got one yummy mummy, that’s for sure! Kate completed her look with two totally on trend accessories, a metallic gold clutch bag and gold cuff bracelet.  This girl knows how to red carpet (she does have a fair bit of experience at it!).
