Elvis & Nixon Review

Good

This movie is based on a real meeting between Elvis Presley and Richard Nixon in the White House in December 1970. The only details about this collision of two icons come from a few eyewitness accounts, as well as the photograph they took together. So the screenwriters have some fun with it, weaving in quite a bit of comedy that encourages actors to chomp merrily on the scenery. It's entertaining to watch, but the script misses the chance to add meaning on the situation.

Elvis (Michael Shannon) is the one who initiates this meeting, concerned about the growing protests on the streets of Washington, DC. So he flies to Los Angeles to collect his long-time friend Jerry (Alex Pettyfer) then heads to the capital to meet with his nutty colleague Sonny (Johnny Knoxville) and pitch himself to President Nixon (Kevin Spacey) as an undercover FBI agent who can infiltrate the nation's youth. Since it's obvious that all Elvis wants is a federal ID badge, Nixon brushes the whole idea of a meeting aside until his advisors (Colin Hanks and Evan Peters) convince him that it would be a great PR move. So just before Christmas, the two men finally meet up, and they discover that they have more in common than either expected.

Because of the absurdity of the set-up and the wackiness of the period styles, the movie feels rather a lot like an extended sketch comedy that's largely improvised by an up-for-it cast. These two men are both such big personalities that a meeting like this would be hard to believe if it weren't for the photographic evidence. The conversation between Presley and Nixon is surreal and hilariously random (and largely fictionalised). Shannon and Spacey are having a great time prowling around each other, pouncing with a punchline at every opportunity, so watching them is riveting. Mercifully, they underplay the impersonations, capturing the men with tiny details of movement and vocal inflection rather than relying on lots of make-up. Although Shannon does have that hair and costume.

Teenagers Mutant Ninjas Turtles Heading For $50 Million Debut At Box Office

Megan Fox Johnny Knoxville

Despite the fact it has been panned by critics and holds a dismal 20% 'Certified Rotten' on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, the cinematic reboot of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise looks like it's headed to the top of the U.S box office.

TMNT
It'll be pizza and shakes all round at Paramount then

Projections estimate the Michael Bay-produced film will take over $50 million in its opening week, meaning it is on course to overtake current number one at box office, Guardians of the Galaxy, which shot to the top spot last week with an opening of $92 million and is still projected to take a healthy $40 million+ this week.

Most of Hollywood ventured out for a nostalgia hit as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles enjoyed its Los Angeles premiere on August 1.

The film’s stars, Megan Fox, William Fichtne, Alan Ritchson, Johnny Knoxville and Will Arnett, were all in attendance but it was for former, and most marketable star whom left the premiere with the headlines following her critique of the critics, who haven’t been as impressed with TMNT as a certain other summer blockbuster.

On the subject of the film’s less than desirable critical conclusion, Fox decided the reviews and the people who wrote them could “f*ck off”, alluding to Transformers: Age of Extinction, which faired poorly with the critics but scored big at the box office.

Following severe backlash, Paramount Pictures have pulled the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles poster, bearing an image of the Turtles jumping from a burning building in an unfortunate combination with the 9/11/2014 release date. While online sleuths have already released screenshots of the image, the studio made a full apology and tried to minimize the circulation of the Australian promo poster.

"We are deeply sorry to have used that artwork for the marketing materials promoting the September 11 opening in Australia," Paramount Pictures Australia said in an emailed statement to Reuters. The statement continued: "Combining that image and date was a mistake. We intended no offence and have taken immediate action to discontinue its use."

'Thor: The Dark World' Dominates The Weekend Box Office With Impressive Opening Gross

Chris Hemsworth Tom Hiddleston Johnny Knoxville Michael Douglas Robert De Niro Harrison Ford

Thor: The Dark World almost became the top grossing November release of all time this weekend when it managed to bring in an estimated $86 million in the domestic market since its Friday (Nov 8) release in the USA. It narrowly missed out on beating the record set by Skyfall in 2012, but its numbers are nonetheless a fantastic result for studio bosses at Marvel and Disney.

Chris Hemsworth is back as the God of Thunder

Benefiting from the global blockbuster that was Marvel's The Avengers, much like Iron Man 3 did earlier this year, the estimated weekend takings of Thor 2 prove that there is still a great deal of life left in the superhero genre and despite lukewarm reviews, the film still has a keen and dedicated audience. The domestic performance from Thor 2 mirrors the similar successes enjoyed by the film in the international market, where it has already grossed $240.9 million. Thor was released a week earlier in a number of key international markets, including the United Kingdom and Australia, and has continued to perform well overseas.

'Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa' Finally Topples 'Gravity' From The Top Of The US Box Office

Johnny Knoxville Sandra Bullock George Clooney Tom Hanks Michael Fassbender Brad Pitt Javier Bardem Ridley Scott

Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa is this weeks number one movie at the box office, ousting the mega-successful Gravity from the top spot after a three week stay. The Johnny Knoxville-starring prank fest more than doubled its estimated cost of $15 million in the first weekend alone, amassing an impressive estimate of $32 million since it was released last week.

Bad Grandpa
Bad Grandpa has topped the US box office at the first attempt

Exceeding expectations by scoring more than $30 mil. at the box office, Bad Grandpa comfortably came in first place, averaging just short of $10,000 at each cinema it opened at across America. The fourth feature length outing from the Jackass team is now the second most successful of the bunch, just about tying with the first movie and coming some way off the estimated $50 mil. made by Jackass 3-D. Box office estimates indicate that the film should end its domestic run with about $75 million.

'Bad Grandpa' Jokes Its Way To The North American Box Office No.1 Spot

Johnny Knoxville

After 3 weeks of 'Gravity' occupying the Box Office top spot it has finally fallen to the second position as Johnny Knoxville's 'Bag Grandpa' rises to No.1. The new 'Jackass' spin-off claimed the top position by debuting with an impressive $32 million according to studio estimates from Rentrak. This surpassed most predictions which estimated around the $25 million mark.

The 4th 'Jackass' movie was directed and co-written by Jeff Tremaine, one of the creators and director of MTV's 'Jackass'. 'Bad Grandpa' follows an 86 year-old grandparent, 'Irving Zisman' (Knoxville), who takes his grandson 'Billy', played by Jackson Nicoll, on a road trip across the USA in a hidden camera comedy spectacle.

'Jackass Present: Bad Grandpa' Looks Like The Early Favourite To Top Weekend Box Office

Johnny Knoxville Sandra Bullock George Clooney Paul Greengrass Tom Hanks Brad Pitt Ridley Scott Michael Fassbender Javier Bardem Cameron Diaz

Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa is predicted to earn close to $30 million at the box office in it's opening weekend, according to Deadline, making it the most likely candidate to finish at the top of the box office come the end of the week. This means that after three weeks of dominating the US box office, Gravity may finally be replaced as America's favourite movie at cinemas.

Bad Grandpa
Bad Grandpa should be an easy weekend winner

Depending on what side of the $30 mil. mark it lands on, the film can become either the third or fourth most successful R-rated film of the year in terms of opening box office revenue. Should the film exceed expectations even further, it could potentially place even higher. The film already made an estimated $11 - 12 mil. on the opening day of the weekend - Friday, 25 October - and could be well on its way to exceeding the $30 mil. mark should the numbers continue to add up. Not bad for a film that only cost $15 million to make.

Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa Review

Good

The Jackass crew takes an oddly gentle approach here, abandoning their more riotous stunt-based movies for a series of undercover pranks, like Borat or Bruno without the social commentary. It's sometimes very funny, although more gags fall flat than hit the mark. But fans will enjoy the interaction between Knoxville and his fearless 8-year-old cohort Nicoll.

Knoxville is in character throughout the film as Irving, an 86-year-old whose wife has just died. At the funeral, his wayward daughter (Cates) turns up to drop off her son Billy (Nicoll) before she goes to prison. So Irving's job is to drive from Nebraska to North Carolina to deliver Billy to his loser dad. On the ensuing road trip the relentlessly mischievous Irving takes advantage of his newly single status to chat up every woman he meets, often with Billy's sharp-witted help. They also get up to all kinds of trouble, robbing a convenience shop, crashing a wedding, upstaging male strippers in a bar and even entering a "little miss" beauty pageant to earn some extra cash.

Whether you find this funny or not depends on your enjoyment of jokes that centre on genitalia, with a particular emphasis on farting. Essentially, the film is a series of elaborately staged set-pieces in which Irving and Billy do outrageous things to get a Candid Camera-style reaction from the general public. And it's often quite funny that people just shrug off things like drinking beer with an 8-year-old or carrying his dead wife's body in the boot of his car. The best sequence involves a gang of burly bikers who dedicate themselves to protecting abused children; watching them close ranks around Billy is actually rather sweet.
