BBC Will Let Public Pick The UK Entry For 2016 'Eurovision Song Contest'

Eurovision Song Contest Graham Norton

After years of Eurovision disappointment, the BBC are hoping the UK can do better next year, by handing the decision of who will represent the country back to the public. The UK’s Eurovision entry had always been chosen by the public until 2011, when a ‘panel of experts’ were brought in by the Beeb to make the decision.

Last year Electro Velvet were chosen with the song ‘Still In Love With You’, which earned an embarrassing five points and saw the UK finish fourth from last. The biggest success the UK has had in recent years was back in 2009 when Jade Ewen finished fifth with ‘It’s My Time’. Ewen won the right to represent the UK through BBC show ‘Eurovision: Your Country Needs You’.

Denmark's Emmelie De Forest Tastes EuroVision Glory, While Bonnie Tyler Can Only Manage 19th

Eurovision Song Contest Bonnie Tyler

Denmark emerged as the winners of Sunday's (May 19) Eurovision Song Contest, with 20-year-old singer Emmelie de Forest taking home the crown with her folk-pop selection 'Only Teardops.' The competition, held in Malmo, Sweden, also gave Scandanavian it's second successive win, with singer Loreen's 'Euphoria' taking home the award in Baku, Azerbaijan, last year.

Considering the massive cost of the song contest in recent years, with host cities spending upwards of £50 million over the past few years, Malmo decided for a stripped back approach this time, with de Forest's song reflecting this austere mood. He singing was complemented by a drums and a tin whistle, resulting an uplifting pop song that was a far cry from the extravagant displays soundtracked by a EuroPop anthem that was the norm for most other countries.
