Biography

Dizzee Rascal (born Dylan Mills, 1985) is a London-born MC and grime producer. His debut album, Boy In Da Corner brought him to national attention and won the 2003 Mercury Music Prize.

Music Style: Dizzee Rascal's music combines sounds and production techniques from a wide range of musical genres, from hip-hop and garage, to heavy metal and drill and bass.

Vocally, Dizzee's flow is fast and clipped, blending influences from ragga, garage and rap.

Despite the mainstream exposure that Dizzee has received following the success of his album releases, grime music remains largely ignored by major record labels, radio stations and the record-buying public.

Music: In his early career, Dizzee worked with his mentor, Wiley. Together, they created some of the earliest grime music, including a track called 'Eskimo'. The pair later had a disagreement and no longer work together.

In 2002, Rascal won the Sidewinder award for Best Newcomer MC. Following the win, his debut album, Boy in Da Corner was released, to critical praise. The track 'I Luv U' was the first single from the album. Following the release of the album, Dizzee Rascal was stabbed whilst he was in Ayia Napa. The press coverage of the incident suggested a connection between the stabbing and an ongoing dispute with the So Solid Crew. The second single from the album was 'Fix Up Look Sharp'.

In September 2003, Dizzee Rascal won the highly regarded Mercury Music Prize, making him the youngest person ever to win the award.

In November of the same year, Basement Jaxx released 'Lucky Star', featuring Dizzee Rascal, from their album Kish Kash. Dizzee also released Jus' A Rascal' from his debut album and the track was picked up and featured in the soundtrack to the film Kidulthood.

Dizzee Rascal's second album, Showtime, was released in 2004 and entered the UK album chart at number eight. On 'Dream', Dizzee sampled Captain Sensible's version of 'Happy Talk' - originally from the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical South Pacific. Later that year, Rascal became the first artist to add new material to a version of 'Do They Know It's Christmas' when he added a rap to a new recording of the charity song, recorded as Band Aid 20.

Maths + English was Dizzee Rascal's third album and was released in June 2007. Maths + English followed in the footsteps of Dizzee's debut album and was nominated for the 2007 Mercury Music Prize. This time, however, he was beaten to the prize by Klaxons, with their Myths Of The Near Future album.

In July 2008, Dizzee Rascal's collaboration with Calvin Harris, 'Dance Wiv Me' became a massive summer chart hit, reaching number one in the UK singles chart.

In December 2008, Dizzee Rascal was arrested in London, following an incident involving a baseball bat.

Label-owner: Dizzee's label is called Dirtee Stank and was the home of his first white label release, 'I Luv U'. In 2005, Dizzee re-launched the label, releasing records by Newham Generals and Klass A.

Wiley Accepts Responsibility For Rival Dizzee Rascal's Stabbing

Wiley Dizzee Rascal

14 years into their bitter feud, grime star Wiley has stepped forward to apologise for Dizzee Rascal’s stabbing that occurred in the Cypriot resort of Ayia Napa.

The pair have been professional rivals ever since the ugly incident in 2003 that saw Dizzee hospitalised, and have been exchanging disses and insults in their tracks. However, having always maintained his innocence before, he admits in a new interview with The Sun that the knifing was partly his fault.

“I love that boy. He knows I love that boy but we’re not gonna be friends, not because we argue. We’re not gonna be friends anymore because he holds me responsible for being stabbed,” 38 year old Wiley said about his relationship with Dizzee now.

Radio 1 Calls Dizzee Rascal's Ruthless Twitter Rant "Disappointing"

Dizzee Rascal

Dizzee Rascal was left a little miffed with Radio 1 for the lack of airplay his tracks are receiving.

BBC's Radio 1 removed the hits 'Love This Town' and 'Something Really Bad', which features Will.i.am, from its playlist.

This angered the 'Bonkers' hit maker and he wasn't going to waste any time in expressing his opinion on the matter.

Liam Gallagher was given the enviable job of opening the 2013 Glastonbury Festival with a surprise set on The Other Stage on Friday morning (June 28, 2013). The singer, who aired his dismay for the festival following his former band Oasis' set in 2004, arrived on-stage and immediately launched into Flick of the Finger, a recent single for Beady Eye.

The cloudy weather and early start did nothing to deter the famous Mancunian, who was on typically brash form. "It's never too early for a bit of Rock'n'Roll aggro, is it?" asked Gallagher as his new band launched into Morning Glory, an Oasis hit written by his brother Noel Gallagher.

Famous for wearing a cardboard shark head in the crazy video for hit track 'Bonkers', Dizzee Rascal shows he's fond of the aquatic theme, analogising his journey on Radio 1: "If my last record was dipping my foot into the swimming pool of happiness, this one is fully going for a swim - backstroke, butterfly, in every way. not just doggie-paddle."

On its 1st July release, new record The Fifth will be available in two formats: a 12-track 'standard' edition and a 16-track 'deluxe' edition that will showcase a few extra exclusive tracks.

BBC Radio 1's Big Weekend was just that - a BIG weekend! With a huge range of hit artists, the radio station left no genre uncovered over the Spring Bank Holiday weekend (May 24th - 26th 2013).

Day 1 saw performances from Dizzee Rascal as he promotes his upcoming fifth album due out later in the year; Rudimental, whose debut album 'Home' has had some remarkable reviews and a number one spot on the UK album chart; Rita Ora who is also working on a new album; and her platinum selling boyfriend Calvin Harris. Saturday brought in an equally impressive line-up with Ellie Goulding who is in the UK before she embarks on a lengthy US tour later in the summer; The Saturdays minus Rochelle Humes who is still recovering from the birth of her first baby Alaia-Mai; and Iggy Azalea whose debut album release is imminent. Robbie Williams Hooks Up With Dizzee Rascal At Radio 1 Big Weekend To Kick Start The Festival In Style

Robbie Williams Dizzee Rascal Rudimental Chase and Status Biffy Clyro Bruno Mars Radio 1 Big Weekend

Dizzee Rascal was on the bill to open day one of the Radio 1 Big Weekend in Derry’s Ebrington Square on Friday (May 24), but rather than just keep the performance to himself the rapper decided to treat the fans to a special guest: Robbie Williams! The two performed their new duet 'Goin’ Crazy' much to the pleasure of the audience, who were already being treated to some amazing weather and performances over the weekend.

The three day event, which began yesterday (May 24) and will end on Sunday (May 26), has already seen its fair share of surprises in addition to the Dizzee-Robbie hook-up, with troubles at Heathrow forcing two acts (Angel Haze and Aluna George) to pull out of the festival last minute, whilst drum and bass duo Chase & Status saw a way around the problem by hiring their own private jet to get to the three-day event.

Meanwhile, Rudimental, who were in Northern Ireland at the time but their equipment wasn't, had to borrow their kit from other performers in order to play their set. Producer Amir Amor said: "We borrowed guitars, bass, microphones, a bit of love! Everything we could. But the gig just blew us away."

Is It A Sign? Spotify Users Vote Alt-J Favourites For Mercury Music Prize

Alt-J Jessie Ware Lianne La Havas Plan B Richard Hawley Dizzee Rascal Ben Howard Django Django Field Music Michael Kiwanuka The Maccabees Sam Lee

This Thursday (November 1, 2012), the winner of the Mercury Music will be announced. As a precursor to the official event, Spotify have taken a look at the streaming figures for all of the nominees, on their online streaming service and Alt-J have attracted more listeners than any of the other Mercury Music Prize nominees.

Of course, this doesn’t necessarily mean that the Mercury judging panel will have the same taste as Spotify’s listeners and Alt-J face fierce competition, even if they have pretty much been tipped as likely winners since the list was announced. Jessie Ware’s another newcomer with a strong chance, as is Lianne La Havas. Plan B and Richard Hawley are among the more experienced artists in there that also stand a strong chance. You should never count on the obvious choice when it comes to the Barclaycard Mercury Music Prize, after all. Remember the year that Dizzee Rascal won? How many of you saw that one coming?

Even Alt-J aren’t counting their chickens just yet. The band’s drummer Thom Green placed his expectations of the band winning the prize at a lowly 8.3% and admitted “We’d been tipped to win before we’d even been nominated, so the pressure was on.” A spokesperson for Spotify, Will Hope, said “We can't predict who the judges will pick to win this Thursday's Mercury Prize, but if it were up to music fans on Spotify, Alt-J would be the band picking up the award. Ben Howard is a close second based on recent streaming habits we've seen. We wish all nominees the best of luck!”
