Camp Hell Review

Very Good
Even with some unnerving supernatural elements, the scariest thing about this low-key horror film is the earnest spirituality of the Christian community. The grounded approach and honest performances are provocative and unsettling. As is the fact that it's based on a true story.

Against his will, teenager Tommy (Denton) is sent to a Camp Hope by his deeply religious parents (Delany and McCarthy). More like a military bootcamp than a week of summer fun, the camp is run by a cult-like covenant community. The rules Father McAllister (Davison) enforces are painfully strict, although Tommy scores points because he's reading Dante. Fortunately, no one knows about his crush on Melissa (de Angelis). Meanwhile, after a violent demon-related incident, Daniel (Eisenberg) has been in a mental health facility for six months.

The Right Temptation Review

Weak
Wow, when did Rebecca De Mornay get old? The Right Temptation is hardly a fitting title for so untempting a movie, a ridiculously unbelievable thriller that puts De Mornay in the middle of a scam dreamed up by Dana Delany's troublesome wife to Kiefer Sutherland. From the moment requests "a woman" be put on her P.I. case, you know something's fishy.... The trouble is, the fish is rotten. Kudos to De Mornay's pet pig, though.

Wide Awake Review

OK
Best known for dazzling us with The Sixth Sense, M. Night Shyamalan hit the big screen most recently with this perplexing dud, also about a kid with semi-mystical powers. Wide Awake is not nearly so fascinating as Sense, as it follows the story of a kid who misses his dead grandpa so much he seeks answers about grandpa's well-being from all the religions in the world. Not nearly as interesting as it could have been, Wide Awake quickly provokes yawns and smirks over its cutesy treatment of death.
