Cindy Crawford was born in DeKalb, Illinois. Her parents are Jennifer Sue Crawford-Moluf and John Dan Crawford.
When she was 10, her brother died of leukaemia.
She was scouted by a photographer aged 16 and subsequently entered the Elite Model Management's Look of the Year contest. After becoming a runner-up, the agency in Chicago agreed to represent her.
She graduated as valedictorian from DeKalb High School and her academic achievements were enough to earn her a scholarship to study chemical engineering at Northwestern University.
She dropped out to pursue her modelling career and later signed with the Elite New York modelling agency.

Cindy Crawford was a major star in the 80s and 90s and appeared on the cover of Vogue, W, People, Harper's Bazaar, Elle, Cosmopolitan and Allure.
She is 5 feet 9 inches and is known for her trademark mole on her upper lip. She has also been known for resembling 70s and 80s model Gia Carangi.
She has been in fashion campaigns for Gianni Versace, Escada, Revlon, Ink, Omega, Maybelline and Clairol.
She has appeared in several music videos including for George Michael's 'Freedom '90', Jon Bon Jovi's 'Please Come Home For Christmas' and Duran Duran's 'Girl Panic'.
In 1991, she donned her iconic red Versace dress at that year's Academy Awards.
