Biography

Christina Hendricks (born 3.5.1975)
Christina Hendricks is an American actress, perhaps best known for playing the role of Joan Holloway in Mad Men.

Childhood & Early Acting Experience: Christina Hendricks was born in Knoxville, Tennessee and was raised in Twin Falls, Idaho. Her father is British, so she holds dual American / British nationality.

Hendricks' acting career started as a youngster in Twin Falls, where she joined the Junior Musical Playhouse Company, performing in productions of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and Grease. The Hendricks family moved to Fairfax, Virginia in 1989 and Hendricks performed in a number of local community plays, as well as productions at Fairfax High School.

Acting Career: Christina Hendricks has appeared in a number of television series, starting out with a regular appearance in Beggars and Choosers, which starred Beau Bridges. She also appeared in The Big Time and The Court, opposite Sally Field and Craig Bierko. This was followed by an appearance in Kevin Hill, a legal drama featuring Jon Seda.

Hendricks has also had recurring roles in ER (which, over the years, has starred George Clooney and Noah Wyle) and Firefly (featuring Adam Baldwin and Gina Torres.

In 2007, Christina Hendricks and Gina Torres shared screen time together again, in the independent film South of Pico, which also featured Kip Pardue. The same year, Hendricks starred in La Cucina, along with Joaquim de Almeida and Rachel Hunter.

Hendricks has also starred in music videos for Broken Bells ('The Ghost Inside') and Everclear ('One Hit Wonder').

The role for which Hendricks is best known, however, is her performance as Joan Holloway in Mad Men. In the show, her character is the office manager of an advertising agency, Sterling Cooper. Mad Men also stars Jon Hamm, Elisabeth Moss and Jared Harris. In 2009, Hendricks won the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series for Mad Men. Much has been made of her curvaceous figure since she started appearing in Mad Men. Despite being recognizable for her red hair, Hendricks is actually a natural blonde and has dyed her hair since the age of 10.

In 2010, Christina Hendricks was cast alongside Carey Mulligan and Ryan Gosling in Drive, an action-thriller directed by Nicolas Winding.

Personal Life: Christina Hendricks married the actor Geoffrey Arend in 2009.

As a child of just 7, she bore witness to the violent murder of her mother and two sisters and even stood up in court to accuse her older brother Ben of the crimes. People were happy to take her word for it when it was unearthed that he was involved in Satanic activity, but now more than 20 years on the whole trauma is finally back for a visit with consequences no-one could've foreseen. Broke after living off charity funds all her life, she readily accepts a cash payment to make an appearance at a meeting of the Kill Club; a group specialising in murder mysteries and who have a particular interest in the case of her family - namely because they do not believe her brother was the killer. While sceptical of their thoughts, she soon agrees to help them pick apart what happened, re-visiting her memories of that fateful night and even seeing her brother for the first time since his trial.

Libby Day is a young woman, still permanently scarred from the events of her childhood. As a 7-year-old girl living in Kansas, she witnessed the brutal slaughter of her family, only weeks after discovering a bizarre interest of her brother Ben's and evidence that he practiced Satanism. After she accused Ben, then 16-years-old, of murder, he was locked up for life and her name went down in crime history. It left her with money from a charitable fund and royalities from her autobiography, but now in her early 30s she's completely broke. Soon though she meets Lyle Wirth, a member of a ghoulish group named The Kill Club, full of crime obsessed wannabe detectives who enjoy solving vicious crimes. They offer her money to help them solve what really happened when she was a girl, because hardly any of them believe her brother was the perpetrator of the massacre. She's sure it was him, but now she's forced to return to that time in her life and remember exactly what happened in the moments leading up to the tragedy - and that gets even more complicated when she finally visits Ben in prison.

Lost River Review

Weak

With his writing-directing debut, Ryan Gosling shows audacious skill as a visual artist but never quite manages to recount a story that grabs hold of the audience. It's a stunningly gorgeous film packed with strong, earthy performances from a starry cast playing against type. But there's no momentum at all to the narrative, which is packed with random symbolism that never quite resolves into anything either meaningful or emotionally engaging.

Lost River is a decaying, abandoned city on the edge of a lake created by damming up a river and flooding another town. In what's left of their neighbourhood, Billy (Christina Hendricks) lives in her family home with her sons: a toddler and a teen named Bones (Iain De Caestecker), who helps support the household by scavenging for copper in the vacant buildings nearby. But he's encroaching on the turf of self-proclaimed gangster Bully (Matt Smith), who is intent on exacting vicious revenge. Meanwhile, next-door neighbour Rat (Ronan) is caring for her delusional granny (Barbara Steele) and trying to help Bones. And when the new bank manager Dave (Ben Mendelsohn) turns down Billy's cry for help, she takes a job at his seedy underworld nightclub alongside Cat (Eva Mendes).

Aside from some blood-soaked cabaret, what goes on in this nightclub remains rather mysterious, as Billy finds higher-paying work in the purple-hued basement fetish rooms. But then everything in this film is enigmatic, as Gosling deliberately refuses to connect the dots. This gives the film an intriguing David Lynch-style tone, although it lacks Lynch's eerie resonance. There's also a touch of John Waters-style trashiness and Terrence Malick-style natural beauty, plus the clear influence of Gosling's heavily stylised past directors Nicolas Winding Refn (Drive and Only God Forgives) and Derek Cianfrance (Blue Monday and The Place Beyond the Pines). In other words, almost everything in this film feels like a reference to another movie, but it's expertly assembled to look fabulous from start to finish, with some seriously striking sequences along the way.
