| Dear Sir, I recently read that there were tentative plans to add a statue of Mandela to Trafalgar Square. I have never written this type of letter before but this prompts me to ask "Why?" I grew up in London, went to school there and lived through WWII as a youngster. I was in Trafalgar Square to celebrate VJ day. My point is Trafalgar Square, by it's very name, is in honor of Lord Nelson and his accomplishments, particularly at the Battle of Trafalgar. It is totally incomprhensible, to me, why Mandela or anyone else, has any right to join this part of our heritage and it would be a travesty to desicrate one of our most notable monuments with this proposed statue. This is Nelson's monument and it should be left, untouched, as such and I ask you to investigate some other place to put a Mandela statue...it definitely does not belong in Trafalgar Square...put it in Hyde Park or Kensington Gardens. I am sorry but this plan leaves me incensed and in a state of disbelief Thank you Phillip Walsh | ||
