Playboi Carti - Whole Lotta Red Album Review

Playboi Carti decided that Christmas Day was the day to give all of his fans a present rather than his own son Onyx as he released his latest album, Whole Lotta Red just as Santa was making his rounds. The rapper, from Atlanta, Georgia, split up from his equally famous Australian partner, Iggy Azalea earlier this year but has previously been reported as having a good relationship with the rapper and model, with Azalea also saying their son "Onyx is so loved by his dad". Seems like Carti may have got his priorities somewhat muddled on this occasion, especially when you consider how much of a gift Whole Lotta Red actually is, and read Iggy's subsequent comments on the matter.

Playboi's eagerly anticipated new album, his follow up to 2018's Die Lit, had been beset by ongoing problems ahead of it's release, not least of which have been the numerous leaked tracks. The album that he has eventually released has no doubt been affected by this as he tries to push his own boundaries. Carti has long since been considered quite experimental but on Whole Lotta Red he has gone further and darker than ever before in defining his sound.

Bon Iver Speaks His Truth On This Year's Highly Criticised Grammys

Bon Iver Grammy Awards

Bon Iver has caused quite the stir on social media this week by voicing his disappointment that Bruno Mars was the big winner at the 2018 Grammy Awards. He has nothing against the singer, but he certainly seems to wish for more musical diversity during the awards season.

Bon Iver, whose real name is Justin Vernon, won two awards in 2012 for Best Alternative Music Album and Best New Artist, and last year he was nominated for his album '22, A Million'. Naturally, he hadn't released anything for the running this year, but that didn't stop him having an opinion on those who did win.

Jim Pusey's Top Ten Albums Of 2016

David Bowie Radiohead Butch Walker Frightened Rabbit Bon Iver Frank Ocean Angel Olsen

Yet the shifting social landscape and loss of musical icons doesn't seem to have galvanised any one artistic movement in response, surely that's on the horizon for 2017. But while this annus horribilis may not be remembered for a particular genre or artist capturing the cultural zeitgeist, it did reinforce the simple point that the concept of an album is not dead yet. From Bowie and Cohen quite brilliantly using the format as a last will and testament, Beyonce's lavish visual album for Lemonade, to Kanye and Frank Ocean bypassing some methods of traditional distribution, it's clear that the digital age of single song downloads hasn't killed the album as an artistic statement. Vinyl has helped to massively bolster sales of physical products too, emphasising the artistic merits of the album beyond simply the music on the record.

With that in mind, many well-established artists delivered records vying for position with their best work. Bands such as Weezer, Green Day, Biffy Clyro, and Against Me! may not be making many end of year top ten lists, but their output in 2016 has been impressively solid. Even Metallica returned with a record that lived up to its hype. Elsewhere other artists produced records that at an earlier point in the year would certainly have made my list; Ray LaMontagne, Brian Fallon, Iggy Pop, Shearwater, Wye Oak, A Tribe Called Quest, Bob Mould, PJ Harvey, Joseph Arthur, and St. Paul & The Broken Bones, all comfortably fit into that category. Of particular note was the album, which kept appearing on my list and then just falling frustratingly into a lower position. Underworld's Barbara Barbara, We Face A Shining Future is a glorious album. It's two men at a very different point in their lives using the music of their youth to paint a portrait of life post 50, and the result is uplifting and hopeful in a way that many other albums weren't this year. I'm delighted that Underworld has picked up a Grammy nomination for such a great record.

One final mention before sharing my ten favourite records of 2016 is for Jimmy Broomfield. Performing under the name Heart Of Oak, his debut EP, aptly titled EP 1, was released this year. It's a collection of songs that are deeply personal and wonderfully intimate with their bare bones performances. His song-writing is both clever and witty and if you're looking for some home-grown talent with a promising future you need look no further than Heart Of Oak's website.

While he was nominated for the prestigious Mercury Prize in 2012 for his highly-acclaimed debut album 'Every Kingdom', Ben Howard really made a splash on the music scene in 2013 after winning two BRIT Awards for Best British Breakthrough Act and Best British Solo Male Artist. He had already been releasing various EPs since he began in 2008, most notably his Island Records debut 'The Burgh Island EP' which entered into the UK Top 40. Now he's here with his eagerly awaited second venture, 'I Forget Where We Were', out on US label Republic Records.

Coldplay's 'Ghost Stories' And The Five Best Breakup Albums Of All Time

Coldplay Abba Adele Bon Iver Alanis Morissette Amy Winehouse

Coldplay’s new album Ghost Stories has been released, to quite a mixed bag of reviews. When just three weeks after the album’s track listing had been announced Chris Martin and Gwyneth Paltrow announced their “conscious uncoupling” we all had a pretty good idea what the tone of the album would be like. With tracks like “Another’s Arms,” “Always in my Head” and “Magic,” it became pretty self-explanatory that "Ghost Stories" was going to be a breakup album.

Coldplay Breakup Albums "Ghost Stories" focuses on the marriage breakup between Chris Martin and Gwyneth Paltrow

Perhaps he was inspired to call the album “Ghost Stories” as some of these breakup albums have been the some of the most hauntingly heartbreaking albums ever released.

Coldplay have suddenly and unexpectedly released a brand new single, 'Midnight,' and accompanying music video which launched on YouTube today. The first signs of an announcement came when the British band wrote the cryptic tweet "Something new at 0:00 in Ulaanbaatar #midnight PH," seemingly referring to the capital city of Mongolia.
