Slava Fetisov became one of the most important sporting figures in the 21st Century while he captained the Soviet Union's Red Army hockey team during the late 70s and 80s. He started playing the game as a child, growing up in poverty under a strict communist government, but soon rose to international fame with the US drafting him into the National Hockey League. However, the USSR government's refusal to allow him to play hockey for America led to a conflict of a more political nature. In recent times, Fetisov has been lauded as a figure of revolution and freedom as he went against all odds to join the NHL by using the policy of freedom of speech to fight for his rights for worldwide acclaim.
