The winner of Indian Idol has called for peace in the country after a radio host sparked fierce protests by making derogatory comments about the aspiring singer.
Prashant Tamang urged his supporters to cease violent demonstrations in the eastern state of West Bengal, telling fans, "Violence has no place in song or music."
More than 60 people were injured and dozens of vehicles set ablaze after the unnamed DJ launched a scathing attack on Tamang.
Indian troops have been called in to calm the protests.
