Kinky Boots was the big winner at this year's Tony Awards.
Pam MacKinnon beat Broadway heavyweights George C. Wolfe and Barlett Sher to win the Tony Award for best direction on Sunday night (June 9, 2013) for her work on a revival of Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? McKinnon, who narrowly missed out on the same award last year, credited her cast for the big win, "I have been so fortunate, so fortunate to work with these people who challenged me and opened me. And all shows close eventually, and this production will live in my memory for a very long time," she said in her acceptance speech.
MacKinnon's 'Virginia Woolf' was lauded by critics and prove hugely popular with theatregoers over the last year. It also won the Tony award for best revival of a play. She was one of two women to scoop notable awards at the 67th Tony Awards, with Diane Paulus winning for her direction of Pippin. Other big winners included Cyndi Lauper's Kinky Boots winning best musical and Cicely Tyson winning for her role in The Trip To Bountiful.
The televised ceremony was once again hosted by the popular TV actor Neil Patrick Harris, despite ratings dropping 1.4 million over the last four telecasts.
Kinky Boots, the winner of the biggest awards, is based on a 2005 British film about a struggling shoe-maker who diversifies his struggling business with the help of a drag queen.
