We all know Gary Oldman as one of Britain’s most talented acting exports, from Dracula to JFK and Harry Potter the actor has done it all in Hollywood. But it appears that during his near 30 years in showbusiness, Gary may have been letting a few things simmer. Now the actor has given a ‘controversial’, shall we say, interview to Playboy, where it seems nothing was off limits. From his views on Mel Gibson to the Golden Globes, here are the 10 things we learnt about Gary thanks to Playboy.

Gary OldmanGary Oldman has let loose, in Playboy of all places

1. Gary doesn't seem too happy with his career.

He’s one of the highest grossing actors in movie history, with a box office total of over $10billion, but Gary doesn't seem to care. When asked about some of his most famous roles, the actor says he didn't think he played Sid Vicious very well in Sid and Nancy and describes his roles in The Dark Knight and Harry Potter as “work.” But as for The Fifth Element, Gary simply “can’t bear it.”

2. Gary is not optimistic about the future

“I think we’re up sh** creek without a paddle or a compass,” is Gary’s assessment of the future of our society. To put it mildly, “our world has gone to hell,” in the eyes of Gary.

3. Gary’s not too fond of today’s youth

“Helicopter parents who overschedule their children,” appear to be the enemy for Gary. “There’s never any unsupervised play to develop skills or learn about hierarchy in a group or how to share,” he says. “The kids honestly believe they are the center of the fu**ing universe.”

4. He’s not too high on modern celebs either

But it’s not just the parents who are the problem, Gary also calls out today’s role models saying, “Who’s the hero for young people today? Some idiot who can’t fu**ing sing or write or who’s shaking her ass and twerking in front of 11-year-olds.” However he does seem to enjoy a bit of Arcade Fire.

5. He’s been sober for 17 years thanks to Demi Moore

Gary was the hard drinking type early on in his career, but eventually Demi Moore called the actor out on his addiction while the pair were working on The Scarlett Letter. Oldman says he’s now been sober for 17 years adding that the secret is, “you have to want to stop”.

6. Gary does not want to legalise marijuana

While he might have had problems with drink, drugs were never Gary’s thing. But his opposition to legalising marijuana is actually because he fears people will drive under the influence. “If you want to do cocaine, heroin, smoke marijuana, that’s fine by me,” he says. ‘It’s just that I worry about kids behind the wheel of a car more than anything.”

7. It’s hard, even for Gary, to get a film financed in Hollywood

Gary says he’s written a script entitled 'Flying Horse' about Eadweard Muybridge, the 19th century photographer who “arguably invented cinema.” But the funding isn’t there, “partly it’s the subject,” he says. “If it had zombies and Leonardo DiCaprio in it, people would be falling over me.”

8. Gary doesn’t get why people were so angry at Mel Gibson

When Gary moves on to talk about Mel Gibson’s recent troubles, the actor appears to come to his defence, calling out what he says is the “hypocrisy of everyone.” “I don’t know about Mel. He got drunk and said a few things, but we’ve all said those things,” he says. He also defends Alec Baldwin over his altercations with the paparazzi, saying, “Alec calling someone an F-*-G in the street while he’s pi**ed off coming out of his building because they won’t leave him alone. I don’t blame him.”

9. Gary thinks there's a “double standard” with satirists being allowed to be politically incorrect

Gary believes that “more and more, people in this culture are able to hide behind comedy and satire to say things we can’t ordinarily say, because it’s all too politically correct.” Basically, he feels Bill Maher and Jon Stewart could say whatever they wanted about Nancy Pelosi, for example, and he couldn’t, meaning there’s now a ‘double-standard’ in our culture. The example he uses is “at the Oscars, if you didn’t vote for 12 Years a Slave you were a racist.” He then adds, “I do have particular views and opinions that most of this town doesn’t share, but it’s not like I’m a fascist or a racist. There’s nothing like that in my history.”

Gary OldmanGary Oldam presumably now has zero chances of getting a Golden Globe

10. Don’t bother giving Gary a Golden Globe

Gary has never won an Oscar, if he did he 'supposes' it would mean something, but as for the Golden Globes, no way. “It’s a meaningless event. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association is kidding you that something’s happening,” he says. The actor then leaves us with this lovely lasting image, that the ceremony is just “90 nobodies having a wa**.” Thanks Gary.
