The Ten Worst Films of 2012

24 December 2012

Most of these movies feature actors, actresses and filmmakers who really should know better...

Savages Still1. Savages

This heavy-handed drug-war thriller proves that Oliver Stone has lost the ability to tell a balanced story. And the all-star cast seems clueless about why they're here. Except a vamping Salma Hayek.

Starring: Aaron Taylor-Johnson & Taylor Kitsch.

The Knot Still2. The Knot

Noel Clarke wrote, produced and costars in this shameless British knock-off of Bridesmaids and The Hangover. Aside from forgetting to include a single likeable character, there isn't one decent gag.

Starring: Noel Clarke & Mena Suvari

The Watch Still3. The Watch

Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn and Jonah Hill are idiots who take on aliens in this lame, mean-spirited comedy that squanders its premise and never makes us laugh at its cheap, obvious jokes.

Directed by: Akiva Schaffer

A Thousand Kisses Deep Still4. A Thousand Kisses Deep

This highbrow time-travel romance collapses under the weight of its mopey, hole-ridden plot. And it certainly doesn't help that leading man Dougray Scott plays a deeply unlikeable loser.

Starring: Dougray Scott & Jodie Whittaker

The Lucky One Still5. The Lucky One

The flimsy plot of this schmaltzy romantic drama hinges on a series of numbingly inane coincidences. And while Zac Efron is decent as a buff Marine, the script leaves him with nothing to do.

Starring: Zac Efron & Taylor Schilling

Fun Size Poster6. Fun Size

A good idea (a Halloween-themed comedy) is wasted in this frantic, resolutely silly romp that desperately tries to undermine its humour with sentimentality and romance. A real mess.

Starring: Victoria Justice & Jane Levy

The Darkest Hour Still7. The Darkest Hour

Decent visual effects aren't enough to save this ill-conceived thriller about beautiful young Americans caught in Moscow during an alien invasion. So thinly written that the plot never reaches full speed.

Starring: Emile Hirsch & Max Minghella.

What To Expect When You're Expecting8. What To Expect When You're Expecting

Only the odd moment of comedy or emotion works in this multi-strand all-star pregnancy epic. But it's so resolutely bland that the film never resembles the real world at all.

The Lorax Still9. The Lorax

Only the odd moment of comedy or emotion works in this multi-strand all-star pregnancy epic. But it's so resolutely bland that the film never resembles the real world at all.

Starring: Zac Efron & Danny Devito

Piranha 3DD Still10. Piranha 3DD

What a waste! After the guilty pleasure of Piranha 3D, this sequel could have been even funnier. Alas, this dud's biggest joke was David Hasselhoff spoofing himself. But when isn't he?

Directed by: John Gulager

And here are the five most disappointing films of the year. We expected so much more from the casts and crews of: Joyful Noise, Men in Black 3, Gambit, Total Recall and Hyde Park on Hudson
