Director Richard Donner announced to an unsuspecting photographer that he is making a sequel to the hit 1985 children's adventure film, The Goonies.

Donner was signing autographs in Beverly Hills when a photographer bombarded him with a series of questions regarding comic book and superhero films, but Donner took the opportunity to express his interest in making The Goonies 2. Although there have been rumours circulating about the possibility of a sequel to the children's classic, this is the first time it appears to have been unofficially confirmed by the director.

The photographer, whose footage has since appeared on TMZ, asked Donner if he believed Hollywood was using comic book and superhero movies as a "crutch" and that, although financially profitable, they are lacking in creativity. The photographer provided the example of the Spiderman franchise which is being re-launched even though "they just finished up the other one a few years ago." Donner denied superhero movies were being used as a "crutch" and stated that the business is one based on finance. The photographer was surprised when he asked Donner if he is "going to make another comic book movie," as the 83-year-old director replied "If you call Goonies a comic book". Whilst there was some grumbling in the background from Donner's awaiting fans that "this was old news," Donner further clarified they are indeed "doing a sequel".

However, whether the old stars are going to return remains to be seen as Donner stated "hopefully" all of them would be appearing in the sequel. Whether the stars will appear as adults in a flashback sequence or if the story will revolve around their characters as adults, remains to be seen.

The Goonies, written by Steven Spielberg and Chris Columbus, followed a group of pre-teens as they set out to find pirate treasure. The 1985 original starred a number of child actors who have since forged impressive careers in the movie industry including Sean Astin (The Lord of the Rings trilogy) and Josh Brolin (Labour Day). The other actors who starred in The Goonies have enjoyed slightly less successful careers than their A-list counterparts: Jeff Cohen now works as a legal representative and producer; Martha Plimpton has recently starred on The Good Wife and Raising Hope; and Kerri Green frequently guest stars on a host of series including Law And Order. Another of the film's stars, Corey Feldman, has since caused controversy in his autobiography in which he alleged he was molested on numerous occasions whilst working as a child actor.
