Seth Meyers: From SNL to Late Night, and Now Emmy Awards Host

What a year it’s been for Seth Meyers so far, first a late night chat show on NBC and now the former 'SN'L writer has been named as this years 'Emmy’s' host. Whilst NBC audiences are currently getting to know Seth a little better on late nights, we thought we’d delve a little further into the comedian’s past before his 'Emmy's' hosting gig.

Seth MeyersSeth Meyers has moved from 'SNL' to 'Late Night' on NBC

Born in Illinois but raised in New Hampshire, Seth Meyers is the son of a French teacher and a finance worker. After graduating from Manchester High School West, Meyers attended Northwestern University in Evanston, where he became a member of the fraternity Phi Gamma Delta. Whilst at university Meyers got his start in comedy as a member of the Northwestern University improv sketch group Mee-Ow. He then joined improv group Preponderate who performed at the ImprovOlympic theatre in Chicago. He also further honed his improv skills preforming as an overseas cast member of Amsterdam based improv group Boom Chicago of which his brother Josh was a member.

Meyers got his first big television break when he joined the illustrious cast of 'Saturday Night Live' in 2001. By 2005 he had been promoted to writing supervisor on the show, before becoming head writer alongside Tina Fey and Andrew Steele a year later. When Fey departed from 'SNL' Meyers was made the head writer for the 2006-2007 season, he then also became the co-anchor of the long running Weekend Update sketch alongside Amy Poehler. During his 'SNL' run Meyers was known for his impersonation of well known figures such as John Kerry, Tom Cruise and Ryan Seacrest. He also performed original characters such as Zach Ricky, host of the kids' hidden camera show ‘Pranksters’ and as one half of the married couple who should be divorced, opposite Amy Poehler.

In May 2013 it was announced that Meyers would replace Jimmy Fallon on 'Late Night' in 2014. NBC was reshuffling its late night hosts after the departure of Jay Leno. While Fallon took over Leno on the 'Tonight Show', Meyers moved into his place on 'Late Night'. Despite having little previous hosting experience Meyers landed the prominent late night gig and announced his upcoming departure from SNL. He took his final bow on the New York soundstage on February 1st 2014 where he was joined again on the Weekend Update desk by alumni Amy Poehler. Poehler would be one of the first guests on the rebooted 'Late Night with Seth Meyers' when it premiered on February 24th.

Now Meyer’s next challenge will come when he hosts the 'Primetime Emmy Awards' on August 25th. Following in the footsteps of fellow late nighter Jimmy Fallon, Meyers succeeds ‘How I Met Your Mother’s’ Neil Patrick Harris who hosted last year. NBC’s president of late night entertainment Paul Telegdy called Meyers “the perfect choice to host the Emmys” due to his “expertise and ease in front of a live audience” as well as his “comedic brilliance, both as a writer and in front of the camera.” An Emmy’s hosting gig is certainly a major coup for Meyers, who seems to be fast becoming NBC’s golden boy. So far things have looked pretty good for the former 'SNL'-er as he seems to be settling into his new role on 'Late Night' with ease. Congrats to Meyers to his latest high profile gig, we’re pretty sure he wont disappoint when he takes the Emmys podium later this year.
