MTV VMAs Round-Up: The Surprises, Scandals & Sore Losers

Well the MTV VMAs are over for another year after last night's Brooklyn ceremony signalled the end of weeks of speculation, Twitter support rallying, and news of who would perform and who wouldn't present the 29th year of the music video awards.

The decision to run without a host this year was an unusual one for the awards show that has historically had celebrities and comedians bringing the bad jokes and keeping the proceedings stitched together. By being broadcast host-less, the awards presented the opportunity for the music and stars to enjoy greater precedence than ever before in an evening of true music celebration.

N Sync
'N Sync Reunited For A Surprise Performance.

Some of the awards handed out were easier to predict than others, with R&B superstar Justin Timberlake collecting the coveted 'moon men' awards for 'Video of the Year' for 'Mirrors,' the joint 'Best Direction' award with Jay Z for 'Suit & Tie' and the 'Lifetime Achievement Award.' It was surely J.T's year to dominate the VMAs as he not only collected his gongs but also performed solo and invited his 'N Sync bandmates on stage for a surprise 90s throwback performance, bringing their renowned 'Bye Bye Bye' choregraphy to a performance of 'Girlfriend.'

Miley Cyrus MTV
Wild Child Miley Cyrus Sparked A Twitter Storm With Her Provocative Performance.

The evening saw a star-studded line up take to the stage, including Kanye West, Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus, Robin Thicke, Lady Gaga and Macklemore and Ryan Lewis. Former Disney star Miley Cyrus proved to be the most eye-opening act of the evening as she ground alongside Robin Thicke whilst he performed his notorious hit, 'Blurred Lines.' She then took the spotlight for herself as she began to sing her No.1 hit 'We Can't Stop' whilst surrounded by giant bears. Miley danced provocatively in a nude latex bikini and white brothel creepers with a strange twisted hairstyle as she twerked it out to the music.

Cyrus' attempts to dance sexily were met with shocked Twitter feedback, with one user really sticking the knife in: "Miley Cyrus completely embarrassing herself at the #VMA awards. Jesus have some self respect, there's called being sexy, then just darn ugly." She took off not long after her performance, writing a cryptic tweet that left fans guessing whether she was bitter about not winning any awards: "Leaving the VMAs. No it's not over. I'm no psychic but congrats @onedirection #songofthesummer." "Damn girl why u so bitter," replied one fan who joined others in calling out the star's premature actions.

P!nk & Nate Ruess Took The Best Collaboration Award.

One Direction did win 'Song of the Summer' for their track 'Best Song Ever,' so no surprises for us or Miley there. However P!nk and Nate Ruess' win for their 'Just Give Me A Reason' video came out of a category that was hard to call this year. The 'Best Collaboration' award was fought over by Calvin Harris and Ellie Goulding, Justin Timberlake and Jay Z, Robin Thicke with T.I. and Pharrell, and Christina Aguilera and Pitbull. After the heavy press surrounding Robin Thicke's video - so provocative it had to be released in a censored form - a win for him and his rap duo collaborators in this category could have seemed most likely. Even the David Fincher-directed 'Suit & Tie' video from J.T and Jay Z was a whole lot flashier than P!nk and Ruess'.

30 Seconds To Mars
30 Seconds To Mars Win Best Rock Video.

Equally, 30 Seconds To Mars' 'Best Rock Video' victory came as an interesting surprise as the Jared Leto-fronted band beat Imagine Dragons, Mumford & Sons, Fall Out Boy and Vampire Weekend. Imagine Dragons' 'Radioactive' has dominated the radio waves over the past months and even received airtime on a whole True Blood episode named after the track but 30STM have proved that a strong back catalogue, mega festival appearances and leagues of frenzied fans proves crucial to awards show success.

Taylor Swift MTV
Taylor Swift Wowed In Hervé Leger.

Amidst the evening's news of wins and losses, the tension between country pop star Taylor Swift and Harry Styles has proved to be one of the most covered angles. Taylor went up to collect her 'Best Female Video' moon man from Daft Punk, Pharrell Williams and Nile Rodgers and managed to give a speech that, for once, was unimpeded by Kanye's immortal "Imma let you finish" tirade.

Swift Clearly Still Has Beef With Styles.

Celebrating the win of her 'I Knew You Were Trouble' video, Taylor took to the mic to dish out some thank yous. "I want to thank the fans because I tweeted about this a lot, I really wanted this," she said sweetly before adding more pointedly: "I also want to thank the person who inspired this song because he knows exactly who he is, because now I've got one of these. Thank you so much." Right on cue, the camera panned to Taylor's ex Harry Styles who looked awkward at first then smirked as he clapped along with his One Direction bandmates.

One Direction
One Direction Were Winners At The MTV VMAs.

Taylor's deeds took a more venomous turn during the evening as the One Direction five bounced on to the stage to accept their 'Song of the Summer' trophy. The female audience members squealed with excitement as New York was declared the best. The camera focussed on Swift who was seen mouthing "shut the f**k up" with a distinct glower on her face.

Macklemore and Ryan Lewis won the 'Best Video with a Social Message Award' for their LGBT rights supporting song, 'Same Love'. Having previously said that this particular award would be a momentous win for him, Lewis said "Gay rights are human rights. There is no separation" when the pair collected their shiny trophy. Mack and Lewis also took home 'Best Hip-Hop' video for 'Can't Hold Us,' beating the likes of 2 Chainz, Drake and J. Cole, and signalling a stellar year of success for the acts who were unsigned as recently as 2012.

Macklemore Ryan Lewis
2013 Has Been A Hugely Successful Year For Macklemore & Ryan Lewis.

The MTV VMAs 2013: yet another year of madness, mischief and mind-blowing performance sets. Best newcomer 'Artist to Watch' Austin Mahone must be wondering what on earth lies ahead for him in the wild world of pop.
