'Jem and the Holograms' Are Getting A Movie - Ignore Bieber Connection
80s cartoon Jem and the Holograms is set to become a movie!
A movie being made by Justin Bieber’s manager, directed by the guy behind ‘G.I. Joe: Retaliation’ and based on an 80s cartoon, sounds pretty awful doesn't it? But that’s before you know that the cartoon is ‘Jem and the Holograms’ and really how much could really go wrong with this awesome character?
Justin Bieber's manager Scooter Braun, lets reserve judgement
If you've never heard of ‘Jem and the Holograms’ fair enough, it was on TV nearly 30 years ago, but now’s the time to get up to speed. The show focused on ‘Starlight Music’ company owner Jerrica Benton who’s alter ego is Jem the lead singer of the band the Holograms. Using her holographic computer named Synergy, Jen was able to instantly become the singer, transforming with pink hair and an awesome wardrobe. The computer was created by Jerrica’s father and designed to be "the ultimate audio-visual entertainment synthesizer” and what does Jen use to remotely operated it? Her earnings! The Holgram’s musical rivals are The Misfits and later The Stingers both of whom are trying to destroy Jem, they also have equally cool outfits. Oh yea and she also fostered 12 girls, her ‘Starlight Girls’.
Ok so here’s the Bieber connection, Justin’s manager Scooter Braun is the man who’s helping to bring Jem and her Holograms to the big screen. That’s really it, Justin himself hasn’t been linked to the project so don’t get too worried. Alongside him is producer Jason Blum who’s biggest success was surprise box office hit Paranormal Activity.
Then there’s the director Jon M. Chu whose credits include the ‘Step Up’ movies and well ‘Justin Bieber: Never Say Never’. This might not be sounding like a Hollywood dream team but give them a chance. Actually they’re looking for your help. They’re doing a version of crowd funding which isn’t looking for money. Instead it’s looking for ideas. They’re asking fans to be part of their creative team, submitting songs, costume ideas or really anything that might help them turn this in to a really fantastic films. They’ve describe what they’re doing to ‘Jem’ as a ‘modern day live action reinvention’ of the character. So there’s your brief. If you want to help out you can go on Tumblr and submit something using the tag #jemthemovie. If your not feeling too creative but you’ve feel you’ve got the voice and the skills, you can also audition to be in the movie itself!
Director Jon M. Chu, with Justin Bieber, stop him from being cast by auditioning yourself
Though some fans of the original show might be really sceptical about this especially if the Bieber connection is played up too much, this movie could really end up being epically awesome. The show was really very much a product of its time so it will have to be given a big of a major facelift. Still it’s probably going be really camp and kitschy and we mean that in the best possible way. Also if you are worried about the Jem character being destroyed just go online and help the team, that’s what their asking for. Actually they've come up with the perfect way to avoid any flac from fans if they don't like the movie.
So will the 'Jem and the Holograms' movie end up being ‘truly outrageous’? We hope so! We’re imaging plenty of ‘glamour and glitter, fashion and fame’ coming our way. Seriously go check out the original theme tune. If these three manage to put together a good enough story then this film could really become an unlikely gem, get it?
