Ellen DeGeneres: Her 6 Best Moments As Oscars Host
Selfies, pizza and audience participation Ellen manages to turn the Oscars into an awesome party.
Ellen Degeneres had her second go at hosting the Oscars this year, after seven years away. There’s was no doubt that the academy were looking for something different to Seth MacFarlane last year and the veteran chat show host delivered. From the selfie seen round the world to the pizza run for the stars, Ellen had many stand out moments from her Academy Awards hosting gig.
Oscar's host Ellen Degeneres
Her opening monologue.
Ellen hit the ground running with her opening monologue, which lightly poked fun at Hollywood (though might have hit Liza Minelli a little too hard.) She began by poking fun at the rainy Los Angeles weather as of late, thanking the world for their prayers. She then had a go at the stars, saying "we all know the most important thing in life is love and friendship and family and if people don't have those things, well then they usually get into show business."
She then turned her attention to Meryl Streep, mocking the actresses' 18 career nominations and saying that because of the cost of hair, makeup and dresses, "Meryl cannot afford to be nominated again". Next in line was Jennifer Lawrence whose fall at last years Oscars was mentioned as well as her most recent fall on this year’s red carpet, telling Jennifer if she won tonight they would bring the Oscar to her. Closing the monologue Ellen referenced best picture nominee ’12 Years a Slave’, saying the night had two possibilities, "...possibility number 1: '12 Years a Slave' wins Best Picture. Possibility number 2: You're all racists."
Glinda the Good Witch
After the show’s Wizard of Oz tribute Ellen appeared on stage dressed as Glinda, the good witch to applause and laughter from the audience. Pink had just performed ‘Somewhere over the Rainbow’ as Ellen rushed out saying "Did I miss it? Is it over?” Complete with crown, wings and wand Ellen said "Not cool, guys, they were gonna call me. I'll do it by myself, 'You had the power' ... Oh, never mind.”
By now you must have seen the epic selfie that Ellen took featuring Jared Leto, Jennifer Lawrence, Channing Tatum, Julia Roberts, Kevin Spacey, Brad Pitt, Lupita Nyong'o, Angelina Jolie, Peter Nyong'o, Bradley Cooper, Ellen DeGeneres and Meryl Streep all squeezed in. Ellen posted the pic on Instagram with the caption, "If only Bradley's arm was longer. Best photo ever. #oscars”
Knowing that the best way to make friends is usually through pizza, Ellen brought out a pizza delivery man complete with boxes of pizza for the stars during the ceremony. Brad Pitt got right in on the action taking a slice, then helping to hand out paper plates. Of course then came the usual problem of who would foot the bill. Ellen first turned to ‘Gravity’ actress Sandra Bullock, saying, ‘“You’ve got a lot of money, you can tip him, right?” But then settled on Miramax boss Harvey Weinstein telling him “No pressure, only a billion people watching. Whatever you feel is right,” The joke continued later when she used Pharrel’s infamous Grammys hat to collect donations.
Bradley Cooper’s consolation prize
Bradley Cooper might not have won an Oscar but he did walk away with some handy scratch tickets thanks to Ellen. However the host wasn’t feeling too generous, after all she told Cooper he’d have to split the prize with her if he won.
No Oscar for Bradley but he may get lucky with some scratch tickets
Getting in the crowd
One great thing that this years Oscar’s host will be remembered for is getting out into the crowd. Whether it was taking Zac Efron’s seat because "Zac Efron is going to be up there. Ladies and gentlemen, Zac Efron." (best presenter intro ever) or wandering around taking pics and handing out pizza, Ellen was the host who mingled the most, making the ceremony seemed more of a relaxed, fun party than usual.
