Pinette was discovered by a family member and hotel security after dying of natural causes, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. Allegedly a female relative grew concerned about Pinette after she did not hear from him for an extended period. It appears Pinette was in the city to attend a wedding. The relative in question contacted hotel security and upon entering the hotel room discovered the comedian's body.

Pinette was pronounced dead at roughly 2.30pm. No autopsy was performed and it has been ruled Pinette died from natural causes. An official with the Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office confirmed Pinette's cause of death had been signed off on by his personal physician. It appears the cause of his death has been linked to liver and heart disease.

Pinette was battling prescription drug addiction last year and had checked into rehab to undergo treatment, causing his August 2013 appearances to be postponed. However, his manager, Larry Schapiro, confirmed the comic's death had nothing to do with his addiction and that "John had become a sober person." Speaking to the Gazette, he added his client had been attempting to lose weight and improve his health at the time of his death and lamented that "the sadness of this entire event is that for the first time in his life he was healthy, he was alive. He'd just turned 50 and John was on top of his game."

Pinette was best known for his comedy routines in which he frequently joked about his weight. He was due to perform in Ontario, California this weekend before continuing to appear throughout the US. As Deadline reports, Pinette was in the process of developing a routine for his upcoming televised special, John Pinette: They Call Me Slim. He guest starred in a number of television shows, most notably the finale of Seinfeld in 1998 as 'Howie'. He played an overweight man who was carjacked at gunpoint. The show's stars look on throughout the incident and proceed to mock Howie's weight before they are arrested for breaking the 'Good Samaritan' law. Pinette regularly appeared on Parker Lewis Can't Lose and, in 2011, had a Comedy Central special dedicated to his Still Hungry routine. The Making Lite of Myself comic also appeared in a number of feature films including The Last Godfather, The Punisher and Dear God.

Tributes from fans have been pouring in on Pinette's Twitter and Facebook feeds with many hoping there is "a buffet in the sky" for Pinette to enjoy. His manager of 24 years Schapiro described his late client as "the funniest, kindest human being that ever lived."

Pinette is not the only celebrity to have died this weekend as actor Mickey Rooney passed away yesterday (Sunday 6th April) at his Los Angeles home.
