Ghost Stories landing on means Coldplay are not only enjoying their sixth consecutive number one album, but now also have the fasted selling album of the year so far. Since last Monday, Ghost Stories has sold an impressive 168,000 copies, beating previous best seller Paolo Nutini’s Caustic Love which sold 109,000 in its first week in April. They’ve also managed to knock Michael Jackson’s Xscape down to the number two spot just one week after its release.

It’s no real surprise that Coldplay have taken the number spot, as the band had so far sold over 11.1 million albums in the UK with their previous five albums. Their latest release sees singer Chris Martin reflect on his ‘“conscious uncoupling” from wife Gwyneth Paltrow, with the ‘break-up album’s’ reviews ranging from mixed to positive.

It tops off a successful weekend for the band who headlined the main stage at Radio One’s Big Weekend festival in Glasgow on Saturday night. They performed a set which mixed new songs with old hits and ended by leading the crowd in a chorus of ‘Fix You.’ Chris then hung around till Sunday where he joined Kings of Leon on stage to help out on guitar for 'Fans.'

While reunited Beautiful South bandmates Paul Heaton and Jacqui Abbott entered at number three with their new album, What Have We Become. Singer Paloma Faith held on to her place in the top five with A Perfect Contradiction which dropped down one place to number 4.
