During awards season it may seem like anything can happen, and you never know who’s going to win, but after its all over it was all really very obvious all along. Now awards season has ended we can finally tally up the victories and say what really was best over all.

12 Years a Slave
The team behind '12 Years A Slave' have a lot to celebrate after this year's awards season

Best Picture -’12 Years A Slave’

Steve McQueen's epic drama was undoubtedly the overall best picture. It was honoured by the Academy Awards, BAFTAs, Golden Globes, Independent Spirit awards and Critics Choice awards as best picture. In total the film has won 216 awards out of 409 nominations, not bad at all.

Dallas Buyers ClubJared Leto [L] and Matthew McConaughey [R] in 'Dallas Buyers Club'

Best Actor and Supporting Actor -Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto

We’re lumping them together because they made such a great red carpet pair this season. So the 'Dallas Buyers Club'  boys were both ignored by the BAFTAs but the pair had a very impressive awards season together. They both took home an Academy Award, a Screen Actors Guild, a Critics Choice award, an Independent Spirt award and a Golden Globe each. Making them awards season’s most lauded double act. Special mention however goes to Chiwetel Ejiofor from ’12 Years A Slave’ who won the BAFTA for best actor and Barkhad Abdi, who was the only real success from ‘Captain Phillips’ as he took home the best supporting actor BAFTA.

Of course we can’t forget Leonardo DiCaprio whose role in the ‘Wolf of Wall Street’, earned him a Critics Choice award for the best performance by an actor in a comedy and a Golden Globe for best actor in a musical or comedy.

Best Supporting Actress-Lupita Nyong'o

Newcomer Lupita Nyong’o had an amazing debut awards season. Her role as Patsey in ‘12 Years A Slave’ saw her awarded the Oscar, Critics Choice Award, Independent Spirit award and the Screen Actor’s Guild award. Her only real competition was ‘American Hustle’s’ Jennifer Lawrence who beat her to the Golden Globe as well as the BAFTA. Still not bad for a first timer Lupita.

GravityGeorge Clooney in Alfonso Cuaron's 'Gravity'

Best Director -Alfonso Cuaron

Gravity’s’ Alfonso Cuaron was undoubtedly the best director of the season. He picked up an Academy Award, Golden Globe, Critics Choice award and a BAFTA award for his work on the sci-fi epic. As well as that, the movie also scored the BAFTA for outstanding British film. However the Independent Spirit award went to ’12 Years A Slave’s’ Steve McQueen, while the National Board of Review honoured Spike Jonze for his work on ‘Her’.

Cate Blanchett Blue JasmineCate Blanchett in 'Blue Jasmine'

Best Actress -Cate Blanchett

There’s no doubt this award belonged to Cate Blanchett for ‘Blue Jasmine’, she picked up the Academy award, BAFTA, Golden Globe, Independent Spirt award, Satellite Award, Critics Choice award and the Screen Actors Guild award. Woah. We’re hoping Cate has since bought herself a new trophy case for all these honours.

Spike Jonze's Her

Best Screenplay ‘Her’

Spike Jonze received much acclaim for his writing on ‘Her’. He was awarded the best original screenplay Oscar as well as the Critics Choice, Golden Globe and Writers Guld of America award. However, he missed out on the BAFTA’s and the Satellite award to ‘American Hustle’. In the adapted screenplay category ’12 Years a Slave’ took home the Oscar and the Independent Spirit award while ‘Philomena’ was the BAFTA winner for Steve Coogan and Jeff Pope.

Hmm this list looks a little familar, it seems that the Academy Awards really did get it right this year.
