The Irish rockabilly star went public with the sad news on Friday (17Jul15), posting a heartfelt message on her Facebook.com page.

She wrote, "As you can imagine we are very sad but happy we're making the right decision for us and our daughter who is doing really well by the way.

"My husband and I have the deepest love and respect for each other and are doing well. As you know I hate to air my laundry in public and never do but thought I should put something on here to dispel any bad rumours. I wish you and yours much love."

The Mayhem singer and bandmate Higham wed in 2002 and have a one-year-old daughter, called Violet.

The end of her marriage comes at a low point in May's life following the death of her cousin, Finbarr Clabby, who drowned in New Zealand earlier this month (Jul15).

The singer went public with the tragedy on Twitter.com last week (ends10Jul15), writing, "Watched the sunset in Istanbul thinking of my poor 2nd cousin Finbarr Clabby and his family... Drowned in New Zealand. My thoughts and prayers are with you."

May is currently preparing for the launch of the second season of her hit Irish TV programme The Imelda May Show later this month (Jul15).
