Idris Elba - Is Idris Elba The Next Man To Take The James Bond Mantle?
Daniel Craig as James Bond - it seems to have worked well, and will continue for another two films after Skyfall, but who can fulfil 007's shoes when Craig's done with the job?
Well, Idris Elba is emerging as the hot favourite to enjoy as turn as the super spy. In 2008, Daniel Craig told The Telegraph: "I think the role could easily be played by a black actor because the character created by Ian Fleming in the '50s has undergone a great deal of evolution and continues to be updated." Craig was, of course, talking in light of Obama's election, but it would be wrong to place anyone in a position simply doe to the colour of their skin. And don't be fooled; Elba's not in line simply to satisfy a yearning for ethnic diversity in the role, he's a damn fine actor, as evidenced by expert roles in The Wire and Luther, both of which winning him critical praise.
It is about time the James Bond franchise caught up with the rest of the world, though; nearly every year we see the same thing: a Caucasian bond and a 'foreign' villain. Maybe a white-British villain trying to outwit an Ecuadorian Bond; how about that then MGM, Columbia Pictures and Sony Pictures? Just mix it up, that's all we're saying.
