Frozen is heading straight for the records set by another Disney Flick almost two decades ago.
The Frozen soundtrack keeps going strong for its tenth non-consecutive week at the top of the US album chart. Its current run has been going on for 5 weeks straight. It looks like Frozen might be a constant presence in the charts throughout spring, which is unfortunate for news writers, who have all run out of ice-related puns a long time ago.
Idina Menzel is getting some well deserved recognition out of the soundtrack's success.
For the fifth week in a row, Frozen took the top position with sales of 133,000 (off 11%), according to Nielsen SoundScan data for the week ending April 13, vaulting over the 2 million-unit sales mark. Frozen has become a hit of Lion King proportions, having matched the 1994 soundtrack’s ten week run. However, according to figures from Nielsen SoundScan, via Variety, the album is nowhere near topping The Lion King's 10 mln copies record, despite achieving double platinum status.
Frozen’s success comes in the middle of an otherwise uneventful week for the charts. Pharrell Williams’ G I R L, shifted only 29,000 copies, while up 18%), and three titles in the national top 10 failed to sell more than 20,000.
The poor sales left enough space for four new releases to slip into the top ten, including music by lesser known acts. Christian rock act MercyMe’s “Welcome to the New” (Fair Trade/Columbia) bowed at No. 4 with 26,000 sold, while Black Label Society, the metal band formed by Ozzy Osbourne’s former guitarist Zakk Wylde, arrived at No. 5 with Catacombs of the Black Vatican (E1), which shifted 26,000 (just 152 copies off MercyMe’s pace). One thing is obvious – the chart this week includes a lot of variety. At No. 6, R&B vocalist SoMo’s self-titled Republic set marks 23,000 copies sold. The last new entry isCountry vet Martina McBride’s collection of rock and R&B covers “Everlasting” (Kobalt), coming in at No. 7 with a 21,000-unit tally.
The week’s other holdovers included 5 Seconds to Summer’s “She Looks So Perfect” (No. 3, 26,000 sold, down 82%), Luke Bryan’s Crash My Party (No. 8, 19,000, up 14%), “Shakira” (No. 9, 17,000, off 41%) and Florida Georgia Line’s “Here’s to the Good Times” (No. 10, 17,000, up 14%).
