Ice Cube almost missed out on his movie breakthrough - because his audition for Boyz n the Hood was awful.
The rapper admits he felt "totally unqualified" to become a movie star and director John Singleton recalls his star showing up totally unprepared.
The filmmaker recalls, "We sat him down and he read... and he sucked.
"I said, 'You didn't read this (script), did you?' and he said, 'No, I've been touring'. And I said, 'Man, you've gotta go read this... and come back.'"
Ice Cube admits he took Singleton's words to heart, adding, "When I read it, I'm like, 'Oh, they about to do a movie about how we grew up. I'm perfect for this.'"
Singleton was stunned when Ice Cube returned for a screen test in August 1990: "He was (character) Doughboy. I was like, 'Woah, it's gonna be a good movie."
Footage from the screen test featured on Ice Cube's Behind The Music special, which debuted in America on Wednesday (07Jul11).
