Vampire Diaries actor Ian Somerhalder jetted to Washington, D.C. on Thursday (28Jul11) to urge members of the U.S. Congress to push for greater preservation of natural resources.
The 32 year old is an avid environmentalist and has set up his own non-profit organisation, the Ian Somerhalder Foundation, to boost awareness about humans' impact on the planet.
He testified at Capitol Hill in a four-minute speech in a bid to explain the importance of conservation wildlife, especially for those species most at risk.
In a detailed testimony, the actor listed the benefits of having tigers, rhinos, elephants, marine turtles and apes in large numbers in their natural habitat and the dangers they face from mankind.
He added, "Looking around the world at these wildlife, it's abundantly clear that humans have benefited from nature in so many ways but have also brought many species to the brink of extinction."
