Hugh Jackman has revealed he's in the "doghouse" with his family because his acting gigs frequently take him away from home life with his wife and kids.

The 44-year-old actor has just wrapped up a string of movie roles, but while he's making strides in his professional life, he tells U.S. talk show host Ellen DeGeneres that recently he's been having trouble balancing his career with his personal life - and his 13-year-old son, Oscar, has called out dad for being absent.

Jackman reveals, "I don't know if you've heard of the doghouse, but I'm living there currently. I've never really gone away to do a movie. I've gone away during the summer vacation or been to have my family with me. So I've been away a lot.

"I had one of those parenting things where I was like, 'Oscar, you need to pick up after yourself. This is about responsibility'. And he goes, 'Really? You're gonna talk to me about responsibility when you're never here with your family?' And I was like, 'How do I come back to that? I was just asking you to wash up, man.'

"We weren't going that deep. He knew how to get me. I'm one leg out of the doghouse right now, and (after) a lot of pick-ups and school lunches... hopefully next few months I'll be out of there."
