Hugh Jackman Idina Menzel Neil Patrick Harris Tony Awards Alan Cumming William Shakespeare

The Tony Awards always promises to be a night of drama, stirring songs and as many celebrities as it is physically possible to pack into the Radio City Music Hall, New York. As it's always something of an occasion even for those who haven't tread the Broadway boards, here's what we know so far about tonight's award ceremony:

Hugh Jackman Is Nervous And Excited About Hosting The Tony Awards

Hugh Jackman

Old Hugh Jackman has really embraced this whole social media thing, hasn’t he? Ahead of tonight’s Tony Awards, which of course he is hosting, the actor unleashed a promo vid in which he can be seen bouncing around in the show. But there are some nerves creeping in there, too.

Hugh JackmanHugh Jackman at the X-Men: Days of Future Past premiere

"There's always a little bit of pressure, but mostly put on myself. It couldn't be a nicer, more welcoming crowd and I can say that from experience, because the first time I came here, I actually had never been on Broadway and I said, 'Guys, I can't do that'," Jackman said.

"Why Is Hugh Bouncing?": Hugh Jackman Jumps For Joy Ahead Of Tony Awards

Hugh Jackman

Hugh Jackman has stepped up his efforts to promote his upcoming hosting of the Tony Awards by uploading a quirky and funny new video. The intriguing two minute clip shows the Aussie actor waking up in the morning and seemingly being unable to stoo jumping whilst he goes about his daily tasks.

After making a mess of shaving and brushing his teeth, Jackman burns himself on his coffee which he throws all over himself due to his constant bouncing. He hands a fan an illegible scribble for an autograph and heads out of his hotel to bounce down the street.

His bouncing continues even when he makes an appearance on ESPN. "Why is Hugh bouncing?" the video asks. Apparently, all will be revealed at Sunday night's Tony Awards.

How Does X-Men: Days Of Future Past's Debut Compare To Other Box Office Goliaths?

James McAvoy Hugh Jackman

Memorial Weekend hasn’t just frustrated Game of Thrones fans, it also saw X-Men: Days of Future Past storm the box office with a global total of $261m – a new record for the franchise internationally. Despite that, though, it looks as though Wolverine et al aren’t even in the top ten when it comes to first weekends.

X-Men: Days of Future PastNick Hoult, James McAvoy and Hugh Jackman in X-Men: Days of Future Past

In fact, it comes in 16th, just ahead of The Lord of The Rings: The Return of The King, which grabbed $250m on its first weekend out in the open, and just behind Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull – a $272m debut for Paramount. All these numbers are from the excellent Box Office Mojo.

X-Men: Days of Future Past has the most successful first-weekend X-Men movie and the biggest opener of the year so far with its hugely successful debut. What’s more, it looks like Fox’s biggest ever debut, and guess which studio was behind James Cameron’s Avatar?

With an estimated global total of $281.1m, Days of Future Past has already earned back its reported $200m budget. The biggest chunk of that came solely from home base, America, with $90.7m over the Memorial Day weekend – oh, and sorry ‘Game of Thrones’ fans; that means a week’s wait for the next episode.

X-men: Days Of Future Past Review

Excellent

Continuing to be the most original and resonant of the Marvel superhero franchises, the X-men return in the capable hands of director Bryan Singer, who again stirs plenty of meaty subtext beneath the thrilling action. He also has one of the best casts imaginable, including Oscar winners, cinema royalty, rising stars and matinee idols.

Best of all, Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) returns to the fold after two less-than-thrilling solo adventures. He's at the centre of everything here, as Professor X and Magneto (Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen) ask Kitty Pryde (Ellen Page) to send Wolverine's consciousness back 50 years to 1973. His mission is to prevent Dr Trask (Peter Dinklage) from inventing mutant-hunting robots, because they will go out of control and cause a present-day dystopia in which mutants and anyone who sympathises with them are killed. But Wolverine's biggest task will be to get the then-feuding Professor X and Magneto (James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender) to work together to keep renegade mutant Raven (Jennifer Lawrence) from making everything worse.

Thankfully, Simon Kinberg's script doesn't worry too much about the whole time-travel thing, shrugging off dubious logic by keeping the focus on the characters. And there are a lot of people to keep an eye on, which makes the film sometimes feel a bit crowded and leaves some characters barely on-screen at all (blink and you'll miss Anna Paquin's Rogue). The best newbie is Evan Peters' Quicksilver, who gets the film's most entertaining sequence as he races around tweaking an action sequence frame by frame. Other set-pieces are grippingly darker, and some don't quite make sense (why does Magneto feel the need to levitate an entire stadium?).

The Avengers Vs X-Men? James McAvoy Wants To See It. Wants To Get Involved

James McAvoy Hugh Jackman

Both X-Men and The Avengers are Marvel’s biggest movie properties. With 'Days of Future Past' currently in the process of dismantling box offices around the world and putting them back together in the shape of a big X, those Avengers will be performing similar feats next year when 'Age of Ultron' hits town and tries to outgun the $1.5 billion dollar machine that preceded it.

X-Men Days of Future PastLooks like James McAvoy is ready to fight just about anyone, including himself?

One can only imagine, then, what it would be like if Marvel decided to include the two franchises in one movie. Marvel geeks out there will instantly be able to flag up any continuity and lore-based stumbling blocks with that, while the more business minded fans would cite rights and ownership. But as Hugh Jackman says on SiriusXM Town Hall hosted by Jess Cagle, if someone wants to make it happen, it could probably happen.

Hugh Jackman Is (Almost) Done With 'Wolverine'

Hugh Jackman

Poor Wolverine – not only is Marvel’s mot infamous mutant getting killed off in the comic books, now it looks like Hugh Jackman is done with him as well. Apparently the Aussie actor is almost finished playing his iconic steel-clawed character. We’re due to see Logan aka Wolverine in at least one more film – the upcoming X-Men: Days of Future Past. After that, the character may or may not reappear in another solo film from James Mangold, the helmer behind last year’s The Wolverine. The 2013 movie didn’t do too well in terms of reviews, but with just under $415 million in worldwide profits, there’s enough incentive for 20th Century Fox to get behind a sequel.

Hugh Jackman, X-Men: Days of Future Past Still
It's almost the end of the line for our tortured hero.

Jackman on the other hand, seems to be at the end of his rope. “I’m excited to see what we can come up with, but I haven’t signed on signed on,” the actor told SFX Magazine. “I’m genuinely at that point where unless it’s better than the last one I’m not going to do it.”

Two of the wisest X-Men of the universe, Charles Xavier and Magneto, must now join forces despite their hostile relationship to go back in time and fix the world so that their kind can survive the horrors of their ravaged future. The duo enlist Wolverine to help them on their mission; a mutant whose healing powers make him the only one strong enough to travel in time. He must find the impulsive fools that are Xavier and Magneto as much younger mutants and warn them of what their actions will do for their future, while on the way attempt to save the life of an important political figure. Will the X-Men succeed in changing their future? Or are there some things in the past that can never be changed?

'X-Men: Days Of Future Past' is the latest instalment of the Marvel film franchise following on from 2006's 'X-Men: The Last Stand' and 2011's 'X-Men: First Class'. Hugh Jackman Anderson Cooper Ewan McGregor Caitlyn Jenner

Hugh Jackman had his wife to thank after a he discovered an unusual growth protruding from his nose. The actor revealed earlier this week that he had a cancer spot removed from his nose, sharing the news with his fans via his Instagram, along with a picture of his bandaged nose, and gave us all a reminder of why wearing sunscreen is an essential task.

According to the actor, his wife Deborra-Lee Furness noticed the spot on Jackman and insisted that he have it checked out. Her weariness proved to be potentially life-saving for the Wolverine star, as his check up revealed that the growth was cancerous. It was a close call for the Aussie actor, who joins the likes of Eric Dane, Bruce Jenner, Ewan McGregor and Anderson Cooper, who have all shared their own brushes with cancer in the past.

The Thor sequel pulled in $8.7 million over its debut weekend in the UK - more than four times the amount that it's nearest rival grossed - and with Ender's Game the vulnerable reigning champion of the stateside box-office, things are looking good for Tom Hiddleston, Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman this weekend. X-Men: Days of Future Past - Teaser Trailer

In a post-apocalyptic world where mutants are now scarce, Charles Xavier must convince Wolverine to travel back in time to warn Xavier's younger self about their impending disaster-struck world. Magneto is also united with his fellow mutants, as now all their kind must stick together if they want to survive a world that they are no longer welcome in. Previously, the battle between humankind and X-Men caused the attempted assassination of an important political figure, something that Wolverine must control as he goes back to instil some knowledge into the much more reckless X-Men of the 1980s.

Prisoners Review

Extraordinary

What makes this thriller extraordinary is its willingness to make us scratch our heads and ask questions as the tense, fable-like story patiently unfolds. This creates an almost unbearably involving vibe, from the slow-burn pacing to the unusual character detail. And all of this allows the cast members to dig deep inside their characters.

It starts as two families in rural Pennsylvania get together to celebrate Thanksgiving, then discover that their two young daughters are missing. Keller and Grace Dover (Jackman and Bello) and Franklin and Nancy Birch (Howard and Davis) search the neighbourhood frantically, then try to help local detective Loki (Gyllenhaal) with his investigation. He settles on an oddball (Dano) who seems unable to provide any information at all. With no evidence against him, he's released. But Keller can't bear to think of this man being free while the girls are missing, so he hatches his own plan to sort things out.

There's a lot of symbolism in this screenplay, as everyone reacts to the situation in his or her own way (clearly echoing the world's response to the War on Terror). But it's also a riveting personal story of the desperate need for justice and revenge. Jackman is terrific as the deeply religious man whose love of guns informs his decision-making. He impulsively reacts like Liam Neeson in Taken, charging to the rescue. By contrast, Gyllenhaal's Loki is more measured and observant, while Howard's Franklin struggles with his own moral decisions. The women are a completely different story, and equally provocative: Davis is feisty but helpless, while Bello crawls into her shell.

Why The Hugh Jackman & Jake Gyllenhaal's 'Prisoners' Is This Year's Must See Thriller

Hugh Jackman Jake Gyllenhaal Denis Villeneuve Paul Dano Terrence Howard

Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal star in Oscar-nominated director Denis Villeneuve's Prisoners, a film that might just be one of the best thrillers, if not one of the all-round best films, of the year. The film hits cinemas up and down the US this weekend (arriving in UK cinemas on 4 October) and whilst it may be lacking in the audience pull power of the latest superhero epic, it has all the substance a gritty thriller needs and promises to be one of the year's most thought-provoking watches.

Jackman stars as Keller Dover, who is put into a position no parent ever want to be in when his six-year-old daughter and her friend go missing at Thanksgiving. When Detective Loki (Gyllenhaal) is called in to handle the case, he promises to bring back Keller's daughter, and when the creepy, RV-dwelling outsider Alex Jones (Paul Dano) is found near the scene, he immediately becomes the prime suspect. But with police unable to pin him for the crime he may have committed, he is released following a 48-hour hold, enraging Keller, who decided to take matters into his own hand. It is up to Loki to get to the bottom of the case before it's too late for the missing girls, and before Keller does something he might regret.

Critics Agree That 'Prisoners' Is A Stroke Of Excellence: Review Round-Up

Hugh Jackman Jake Gyllenhaal Paul Dano Denis Villeneuve

Prisoners is by no means your average crime thriller, and maybe that's why critics are swooning over the latest project form Oscar-nominated director Denis Villeneuve (Incendies); a kidnapping-based movie that promises to leave viewers questioning their own morals as to how far they'd go to protect their child. Starring Hugh Jackman, Jake Gyllenhaal and the massively under-rated Paul Dano, the film has being widely praise since it premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival this month, with critics tipping their hats to the actors, director and everyone else involved for making one of the most memorable thrillers in years.

Hugh JackmanJake Gyllenhaal
Jackman and Gyllenhaal star alongside each other in "an actor's duel"

The film is set in a rural American town and poses the question, 'how far would you go to protect your child?' When the unthinkable happens to Keller Dover (Jackman) when his 6-year-old daughter and her friend go missing, seemingly leaving no trail and no certain answers as to where they could be. There is one possibility as to where they could be though, and that's the dilapidated RV of neighbourhood creepy guy Alex Jones (Dano), which was seen only moments later in the same vicinity as where the two girls went missing. It's a test against time as Detective Loki (Gyllenhaal) must get to the bottom of the crime before Dover gets to Jones and makes him pay for what he may have done.

Did You Catch The Wolverine Easter Egg? Film Hints At Future X Men Movie In Post-Credits Scene

Hugh Jackman Patrick Stewart Ian McKellen

The Wolverine currently stands at the top of the US Box Office, mirroring this success in around 100 other countries across the globe, but despite this successful audience turn-around, not everyone stuck around to see the sneak peak at the next X Men film. The scene, which comes after the end credits, may have blindsided a number of cinema-goers, who missed out on the pretty epic scene.

Hugh Jackman
Jackman is back as Wolverine

The scene is set two years after Logan's run in with Viper and his ninja army in Japan and sees Wolverine stood in line for an airport metal detector. He looks up to a wall-mounted television, playing an advertisement for Trask Industries (the company responsible for launching the mutant-hunting Sentinels in next summer's X-Men: Days of Future Past), before being ushered through the metal detector, which obviously goes off and Logan has to be patted down (how many people wanted that job?!) by a security guard. During his pat down, he notices a familiar scene; coins and other loose metal objects shaking furiously around him, meaning only one thing.

'The Wolverine' Dominates Box-Office: But Did You Stay For The Easter Egg?

Hugh Jackman James Mangold X-Men

So James Mangold's The Wolverine, starring Hugh Jackman, wasn't really that bad in the end. There was brief couple of days when Rotten Tomatoes was filling up with a flurry of bad reviews for the X-Men movie, though the heavyweight critics gave Jackman and company the benefit of the doubt.

WolverineHugh Jackman as The Wolverine

During its opening weekend at the box-office, the movie took a modest $55 million (despite estimates of $80 million) though pulled in $86.1 million internationally to comfortably recoup its budget. In other words, from now on everything that The Wolverine pulls in at the cinema and on DVD and BluRay is pure profit. In other, other, words - it's all been a rather big success.

The Hugh Jackman X-Men movieThe Wolverine did huge business overseas on its opening weekend, comfortably making back its budget.

The superhero picture set in Japan opened bigger than any previous X-Men movie abroad, making $86.1 million internationally to add to a modest $55 million domestically. The 20th Century Fox project certainly cannot be considered a flop in the U.S - it still earned the No.1 spot - though it made $10 million less than expected.

Box Office Round-Up: The Wolverine Slices It's Nearest Competitor In Half In Walk-Over Weekend

Hugh Jackman Adam Sandler

The Wolverine, Hugh Jackman's latest vehicle to star as one of the X Men's most famous recruits; Wolverine, shot straight to the top of the US Box Office this weekend and many other film charts across the globe. Domestically, the film underachieved, taking in a lower-than-expected $55 million, however it's performance overseas gave bosses 20th Century Fox something to celebrate as it brought in roughly $86.1 million, meaning that it has already recouped it's estimated $120 million budget.

Hugh Jackman
The Wolverine underperformed in North America, but recouped it's losses overseas

In spite of the major overseas takings, with the film managing to reach the number 1 spot in 100 countries, the $55m in takings that the film brought in throughout North America is at least $10 million below expectations, and a far cry from the $85.1 million opening that the universally panned X-Men Origins: Wolverine managed to make in early May 2009. With a much better critical reception this time round, some forecasters were predicting the film to go on and beat that number, but with such an encouraging stake in the overseas market, we doubt producers will be losing too much rest over what could be a sleeper hit in the domestic market. Still, with such an underwhelming domestic take, mirroring such recently released flops as R.I.P.D., After Earth and The Lone Ranger, are these poor figures a reflection of a recession-hit economy, or of an audience no longer interested in such throwaway action films?

US Weekend Box Office: The Wolverine Cuts The Competition Despite Critical Reaction

Hugh Jackman Famke Janssen Ryan Reynolds Jeff Bridges Vera Farmiga X-Men Hiroyuki Sanada Tao Okamoto Lili Taylor Patrick Wilson Ron Livingston

The Wolverine, starring Hugh Jackman, has placed at number one in the US Weekend Box Office. The latest instalment in the X-Men franchise sees Wolverine a.k.a. Logan visit Japan in order to face his past. The movie continues the story of X-Men: The Last Stand in which we saw Wolverine forced to kill Jean Grey (Famke Janssen). Also starring alongside Jackman are Hiroyuki Sanada (Sunshine) and models Tao Okamoto and Rila Fukishima.

Those who have commented positively on The Wolverine have said the film creates a diverse character which "pumps some feeling into the guy along with his muscles and steel talons" (Geoff Pevere - Globe and Mail). Others, such as Toronto Star's critic Raju Mudhar, have praised the production team for ensuring the "superhero/Asian crime drama mash-up" is successful.

Box Office Predictions: The Wolverine Looks Like A Clear Winner In Quiet Weekend

Hugh Jackman Steve Carell

After a relatively quiet week in terms of new cinematic releases, Hugh Jackman's latest turn as James 'Logan' Howlett, aka Wolverine, is expected to shoot straight to the top of the box office chart by quite some distance. The Wolverine has few competitors capable of really challenging it for the top spot, that is unless one of last week's top five can provide a challenge, which looks increasingly unlikely to happen.

Wolverine Set To Top A Steady Weekend Box Office

The weekend box office appears to be in Hugh Jackman's capable hands.

After a complete turnaround in reviews, the James Mangold-directed chapter of the X-Men story is quickly shaping up to be one of the most profitable releases of the season – nowhere near Iron Man 3, of course, but that’s one benchmark that won’t be reached for a while, it would seem.

How Does The Wolverine Stack Up Against Other X-Men Films?

Hugh Jackman X-Men

Hugh Jackman’s latest turn as The Wolverine in James Mangold’s The Wolverine has polarized opinion; some praised the J-movie style and deliberate slow pacing, while some found it out of place and dull. But how does the latest entry into the X-Men franchise compare to the other films in the franchise?

Hugh Jackman as The WolverineJackman is enjoying his finest hour as Wolverine, somehow

Well, comparing it to the earlier entries makes from grim reading. X-Men - at the turn of the millennium - launched the movie version of the comic book in a big way, scoring at the box office and landing an 82% rating on review aggregator site, Rotten Tomatoes.

The Wolverine Review

Good

It's only been four years since 2009's X-men Origins: Wolverine, and it's hard to see how this film does anything to correct that film's messy plot, harsh editing and uninteresting action. This one has a much more interesting Japanese setting and some great characters, but its focus on action over depth leaves it feeling gratuitous and empty. We may be entertained by the whizzy chaos of it all, but we never feel much suspense.

It begins in Alaska, where Logan (Jackman) is still licking his wounds after the death of his lover Jean Grey (Janssen), who appears regularly to him in sexy, soft-focus dreams. Then a young woman (Fukushima) turns up, insisting that he return to Japan to see Yashida (Yamanouchi), whose life Logan saved in the A-bombing of Nagasaki. But in Tokyo, Logan finds that the near-dead Yashida wants to relieve him of his healing immortality with the help of a sinister blonde doctor named Viper (Khodchenkova). Meanwhile, Yashida's son Shingen (Sanada) is miffed that his daughter Mariko (Okamoto) is the heir to his father's fortune. And there are armies of tattooed goons and arrow-shooting ninjas chasing Logan wherever he goes.

The film has a brisk pace, barely pausing to regain its breath before plunging into another massive action set-piece. But none of these sequences stands up to even the slightest scrutiny: laws of logic and physics are abandoned as the hugely muscled Logan battles everything in sight. Even after Viper steals his powers, he still has those retractable adamantium claws, which come in handy when you're fighting tenacious thugs on top of a speeding bullet train.

"The Wolverine" Fights Tooth And Nail For Surprisingly High Box Office Opening

Hugh Jackman

The Wolverine seems to be that rare breed – a movie with poor reviews and a projected terrible opening, that manages to claw out of the rut. As X-Men spinoffs go, Wolverine was always the perfect character to go get his own movie, without the X-Men brand attached. Though everyone loves a bit of good ol’ Professor Xavier, there’s no argument as to who the most famous mutant is. As such, The Wolverine is scrabbling for first place at the box office this weekend and is projected a $70+ million domestic opening, according to Vulture.

Hugh Jackman, Wolverine Premiere
Jackman at The Wolverine premiere - the man has a lot to smile about.

That’s a lot of cash for a movie opening this late in summer – after all, last weekend’s big winner, The Conjuring, checked in at just under $40 million. Still, The Wolverine seems to be a late bloomer for the critics, having amassed what can only be referred to as a overall slamming by the critics, only to rise up from the ashes later – and all that, before the film even saw its general release. After holding a “rotten” rating for over a week, the film is now rated as 70% “fresh” on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes – and those critics are notoriously hard to sway.
