Pan Lets Hugh Jackman Explore His Dark Side

Hugh Jackman JOE WRIGHT

In the new adventure fantasy origin movie Pan, Hugh Jackman finally gets a chance to play the villain of the piece. "That nice guy stuff is boring," he laughs about his reputation as the nicest actor in the world, adding that he is "perpetually curious and hungry, wanting to get better."

Hugh Jackman in PanHugh Jackman likes playing the bad guy

Jackman plays Captain Blackbeard in the movie, a character who is only mentioned once in J.M. Barrie's original Peter Pan novel. "There's one line - page 53 - that Hook originally learned his trade as the bosun for Blackbeard," Jackman explains.

Pan Review

Good

After several high-profile grown-up movies (from Atonement to Anna Karenina), director Joe Wright aims this Peter Pan origin story squarely at children. So while it's far too manic and broad for adults, this adventure will be the most exciting movie any 8-year-old has seen in years. It's colourful and fantastical, and it thankfully doesn't indulge in reworking the beloved J.M. Barrie stories. Instead, it imagines an action-packed prequel universe.

As German bombs fall on London during the Blitz, young Peter (Levi Miller) is up to all kinds of mischief in the grim orphanage overseen by Mother Barnabas (Kathy Burke), who sells bad boys to airborne pirates. Sure enough, one night Peter is taken, sailing into the sky to Neverland, where he is sent to work in the mines for the swaggering, heartless Captain Blackbeard (Hugh Jackman). In the mines Peter is befriended by the adventurer Hook (Garrett Hedlund), and when Peter discovers that he can fly they make their escape. Blackbeard chases them out into the woods, where they take refuge with Princess Tiger Lily (Rooney Mara) and her tribe, which is convinced that Peter is the child of a prophecy that will lead the fairy kingdom to freedom. But just when Peter learns who his parents really were, Blackbeard catches up with them.

This is an old-school kids' movie, packed with larger-than-life characters and outrageously imaginative action sequences that make the most of the 3D cinematography. Yes, there's so much digital trickery going on that the movie is essentially a cartoon, but it's so vividly explosive that it's a lot of fun to watch. And many of the big set-pieces are genuinely thrilling. There's also quite a lot of fun to be had in the way the story twists the familiar characters around. Obviously, Hook couldn't have always been a bad guy; here he's one of the heroes, and he still has both hands, which hints that further prequel adventures may be on the cards.

Pierce Brosnan Says The New James Bond Will Be White And Male

Pierce Brosnan James Bond Idris Elba Daniel Craig Tom Hardy Hugh Jackman

Former James Bond actor Pierce Brosnan reckons that the next star to play 007 will be a white male. For months now, the rumour has been that ‘Luther’ actor Idris Elba would be the next actor cast as the suave British spy, but Brosnan doesn’t believe that the producers will be making that move yet.

“Anything is possible for sure, but I think he'll be male and he'll be white,” he told The Press Association in an interview on Wednesday (September 23rd). However, the 62 year old Irish star did add that “there's wonderful black actors out there who could be James Bond, and there's no reason why you cannot have a black James Bond.”

'Chappie' Star Dev Patel Admits Co-Starring With A Robot Brought Its Challenges

Dev Patel Sharlto Copley Neill Blomkamp Die Antwoord Hugh Jackman Sigourney Weaver

Dev Patel stars in one of the most unusual sci-fi movies of recent years, 'Chappie', in which he plays a celebrated engineer and inventor of a robotic police force. However, communicating with a robot as opposed to another actor was always going to bring its challenges.

Dev Patel in 'Chappie'
Dev Patel stars alongside Sharlto Copley in 'Chappie'

He's probably best known for starring in the Oscar winning Eastern drama 'Slumdog Millionaire', but Dev Patel is no stranger to the sci-fi fantasy genre. In 2010, he appeared in M. Night Shyamalan's 'The Last Airbender', but rather than having to weave around various special effects, this time he was expected to enact scenes with an inanimate object.

Chappie Review

Good

This is a terrific small film about artificial intelligence wrapped within a much bigger, less involving action blockbuster. When he's grappling with issues of existence and consciousness, filmmaker Neill Blomkamp has a lot of fascinating things to say. But he also seems unable to resist tipping everything into contrived chaos, adding an unconvincing villain and lots of violent gun battles. It's an awkward mix that might please action movie fans more than those who like to engage their brains.

It's set after 2016, when the Johannesburg police deployed a team of Scout robots to bring order to the gang-ruled streets. This has been a bonanza for the tech company Tetravaal, run by hard-nosed CEO Michelle (Sigourney Weaver), who chose the Scout model, designed by the nerdy Deon (Dev Patel), over a more military-style behemoth called Moose, designed by trigger-happy Vincent (Hugh Jackman). Meanwhile, a low-life trio of offbeat, high-energy thugs (Ninja, Yo-Landi Visser and Jose Pablo Cantillo) decide to crack into the Scout's control system, so they kidnap Deon, inadvertently getting their hands on his newest prototype, the first truly sentient robot. When he's switched on, Chappie (Copley) has a sensitive soul and learns rather too quickly from his captors.

With films like District 9 and Elysium, Blomkamp showed an ability to seamlessly integrate technology with a rough and real story, and the effects work here is remarkable mainly because we never see how they're done. The robots look utterly natural mixing with humans, and Copley's performance is so astonishing that Chappie quickly becomes a hugely sympathetic character, uncannily taking on the traits of the people around him. It also helps that the film's script continually puts Chappie into situations that force us to feel his emotions and, most importantly, his powerful sense of self-preservation. Yes, he wants to live!
