American shock jock Howard Stern has made ratings gains in the top radio markets - despite recent battles with regulators.

In the winter quarter ratings from ARBITRON, Stern was up 22 per cent in New York over the autumn quarter, and was number one in Los Angeles among listeners aged 25-34.

In February (04), controversial Stern was dumped from six CLEAR CHANNEL stations, the FEDERAL COMMUNICATIONS COMMISSION levied fines against his show in March (04) and this month (APR04) proposed further penalties for his programme's content.
