Detective Story Review

Good
It's just another day at the precinct for Jim McLeod (Kirk Douglas)... well, that's what we're supposed to think anyway.

Detective Story takes place almost entirely within a detective squad room of a police station. Originally a play, the film focuses on the dramas -- large and small -- that go on during this fateful day. A woman (Lee Grant) is hauled in for shoplifting. She spends the entire day just sitting there, waiting. Another man is brought in for stealing from his boss in order to fund his girlfriend's expensive tastes, while her sister begs for the cops to let him go. Two burglars are given the shakedown. And, in what drives the film's most critical plot forward, McLeod spars continuously with a suspicious doctor for reasons unknown. When McLoed's wife (Eleanor Parker) shows up, it'll come to a head.

The Delicate Delinquent Review

OK
Jerry Lewis's first sans-Dino flick (Martin didn't want to be seen on screen in a police uniform) isn't anything special, but its goofy premise -- a janitor is mistaken for a hoodlum, and he is "rehabilitated" by an oblivious policeman -- might win him a few converts. The gags aren't terribly good or bad, but a gibberish-filled fight with a Japanese wrestler (not exactly a sumo wrestler, but whatever) is somewhat memorable.

The Swinger Review

Weak
Ann-Margret proved she could get her freak on (remember Tommy's baked beans?) in this 1966 farce, wheren a young Ann joins the "swinger underground" as an observer and makes up wild stories about her crazy life to sell to Girl Lure magazine. Mostly these comprise song and dance routines... that is, when the plot makes any sense at all. Ann's fab as ever, proving that she can make the crappiest of stories look, well, passable.
