Road House Review

Terrible
Mike Nelson, in his fantastic book of reviews of awful movies (Mike Nelson's Movie Megacheese), calls Road House "the single finest American film. Certainly it stinks, but I believe the filmmakers meant it to, and succeeded grandly." Road House also made its way into Bad Movies We Love, Edward Marguiles and Stephen Rebello's fine rundown of the worst movies ever made.

As a movie lover, I feel it's important to see the clunkers so I can appreciate the classic stuff. Part of me felt incomplete for not seeing Rowdy Herrington's 1989 anti-classic. When the time came to review it -- so that watching the movie felt somewhat legitimate -- I jumped at the chance. The verdict: In terms of sheer awfulness, I think 13th Child, SuperBabies: Baby Geniuses 2, and House of the Dead beat it. Oh, sure, Road House is bad. It's just not awestruck bad.

Romeo Is Bleeding Review

OK
Lena Olin is up to her old tricks again, as are Gary Oldman, Juliette Lewis, and Annabella Sciorra, in this twisted tale of a slightly corrupt cop and the company he keeps. Not much about Romeo is Bleeding sticks with you for long, the exception being Olin's shrieking hit-woman who ends up with one arm... Delightfully bizarre.

Wag the Dog Review

Excellent
Another year-end flick with another four-star rating? What, am I nuts, or just some corporate tool shilling for would-be Oscar contenders?

Never mind that I am saving up all my real praise for Spice World next week... I'll try to lay it on again for Wag the Dog. It's a great little premise: what would happen if you tried to produce a phony war as a diversion away from a lecherous President's leisure time? A lot of wacky hijinks, from the looks of it! With everything from a "We Are the World" parody to a memorial for a P.O.W., Wag the Dog is really just a send-up of America's fascination with war from WWII through the Gulf War, where combat truly became a ridiculous exercise in soundbites and TV footage.
