The stage version of his book, which was also turned into a film starring John Cusack and Jack Black, failed to find an audience in New York and was cancelled and Hornby can't understand why the critics panned it.
He tells WENN, "I was very sad that it didn't succeed. They were very talented people and they did a really good job.
"It was one of those awful stories where I thought everyone was great and I went to the first night, which was wonderful, had a great party and then the New York Times review came in and it was over and that was it."

Hornby, who also wrote the Hugh Grant movie About a Boy, has recruited Folds to compose music to accompany lyrics he penned.
And Folds reveals they make a prolific team - they already have nearly two albums' worth of material.
He says, "I write around his lyrics, which I do easily 'cause he's written these great lyrics. Right now we're up to 18 (songs) that I think are really good, but I think he'll be inspired when he starts hearing them finished and will start to write some more - like a creative second wind or something."

All heiresses should serve prison sentences - just for being the idle rich, according to High Fidelity star John Cusack.
The actor is among the celebrities who cannot feel sorry for Paris Hilton as she serves a second spell in jail for violating her probation following her 2006 drink-driving arrest - and he feels America would be a better place if all "old money" types were locked away for a short period of time.
He says, "I think all heiresses with old money should be put in jail on general principal. "I'm an Irish-American, so I'm anti-royalist. I intrinsically don't trust the monarchy, so any heiress should have to put in mandatory prison time."
Joking aside, Cusack is appalled by the amount of news the Hilton story is generating: "It's sad to me because it's taking up air time when habeas corpus is suspending but nobody's doing anything about it. You face your accuser and all your rights stem from that.
"This administration is taking away habeas corpus and people are talking about Paris Hilton. That's America."
Movie star John Cusack hopes his harrowing new movie will lead to debates about the US troops coming home from Iraq in bodybags.
The High Fidelity star plays a dad trying to come to terms with his soldier wife's death in the line of duty in first-time director JAMES C STROUSE's new movie GRACE IS GONE, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in Utah over the weekend (20-21JAN06).
And the portrayal touched a nerve for Cusack, who admits he can sympathise with families whose sons, daughters, husbands and wives are simply sent home without fanfare in bodybags.
He fumes, "I thought it was the most brazen, cowardly, egregious political act I'd seen in my lifetime.
"Do you think that's going to stop anything? Do you think if you don't show the coffins we won't find out?"
In the film, Cusack plays a pro-war patriot, who missed out on the chance to serve his country due to his poor eyesight.
He's glad Saturday's (20JAN07) premiere led to great discussion among Sundance regulars, many of whom left the cinema in tears.
Director Strouse adds, "I hope it's the type of story that holds up five or 10 years from now, but I hope that it does sort of hit a nerve."
The $9.75 million (GBP5 million) Broadway musical High Fidelity will close on Sunday (17DEC06), just one month after opening previews were staged.
The production is based on British author Nick Hornby's best-selling book, which was adapted into a 2000 Hollywood movie starring John Cusack and Jack Black, and failed to garner healthy advance sales before opening to the public last week (07DEC06).
The New York Times critic described David Lindsay-Abaire's show as one of the "all-time most forgettable musicals".
Last week, New York's Imperial Theatre was half-empty for the first public performances, prompting producers to pull the plug.
Sources tell American magazine US WEEKLY that Cusack, 36, and 41-year-old
Ryan - who first met while doing voices for the 1997 animated movie ANASTASIA -
have been an item for five months.
A pal explains, "They have amazing chemistry, and the timing was
