Trading Places Review

Excellent
Eddie Murphy and Dan Aykroyd have made some bad movies in their day, but Trading Places is one of their respective bests.

Now legendary, the film has been referenced and homaged to an extent matched by few other recent films. It's a classic story: Greedy Phildadelphia commodity brokers Randolph and Mortimer Duke (the inimatable Ralph Bellamy and Don Ameche) bet the sum of $1 on a "scientific experiment," namely that they can depose their successful managing director Louis (Aykroyd) and replace him with a common street bum named Valentine (Murphy).

Brewster's Millions Review

Good
A guilty pleasure from my childhood, Brewster's Millions is based on an ancient novel. In fact, it's at least the fifth adaptation of the old novel by the same name -- only the spending money is more and more each time.

What money is that? Oh, just $30 million, left to Montgomery Brewster (Richard Pryor) by his sole relative. The catch? The real inheritance is $300 million -- and if Monty wants it, he has to spend the $30 million in 30 days, and at the end of that time he can't have any assets to show for it. Oh, and he can't tell anyone what's going on, either.

Falling Down Review

Excellent
Falling Down proved in 1993 that Joel Schumacher can make a good movie if he tries. A minor cult favorite, Falling Down tells the simple story of a guy (Michael Douglas) trying to get home from work... only he's been laid off, he gets stuck in traffic, he can't order breakfast, his wife refuses to let him see his kid, and... well, and our anti-hero snaps, resulting in a manhunt led by last-day-on-the-job cop Robert Duvall. Two interesting characters intertwine while a raucous and wry adventure develops underneath them. Quite a fascinating and original work of art.

Space Jam Review

Bad
As a teenager, when I was rabid New York Knicks fan, I hated Michael Jordan. I hated how smug he was on the court. I hated how he always hit the big shot. I hated his commercials. I hated his Chicago Bulls teammates and his Zen-poseur coach, Phil Jackson. I hated the obnoxious bandwagon fans he created (second only to ignorant, win-happy, tradition oblivious, fair weather Yankee fans), as well as the wannabe playground showboaters he inspired.

That being said, I am probably not the most impartial person to watch Space Jam, the 1996 outing in which Jordan helps the beloved Looney Tunes gang compete in an interplanetary basketball game. However, any die-hard Bulls fan can agree with any Knicks fan on this one fact: Jordan is a terrible actor
