Time After Time Review

Very Good
As ridiculous fantasy movies go, Time After Time has got to be one of the most absurd. Got to be. How else would you explain a film in which Jack the Ripper goes forward in time in H.G. Wells' time machine -- and Wells pursues him in order to apprehend the killer? Yeah, exactly. This cinematic oddity is nonetheless a true guilty pleasure, with Malcolm McDowell (as Wells) discovering the joys of French fries and motorcars as he's transported to modern-day San Francisco in a machine that, unbelievably, accounts for time zones. Mary Steenburgen is awful (declaring on their first date that she's "not a dyke!") as the love interest -- but so awful you can't turn away.

Demon Seed Review

OK
All good movies demand a cheap knockoff, but Demon Seed rips off so many films so blatantly it's hard to actually identify them all.

At the core, Demon Seed is a ripoff of Rosemary's Baby and Colossus: The Forbin Project. We've got a baby. We've got a computer. OK, we've got a baby whose dad is a computer.

Fright Night Review

Very Good
B-movies don't deserve any special treatment. Some people think we need to lower our standards for such productions, but to me, a movie is a movie, and each must stand on its own merits. Fright Night, the popular 1985 scream-feast by Tom Holland, is truly a B-movie. But it knows that and uses all the traditional B-movie clichés: campy situations, high school students, cheesy performances, bare breasts, make-out scenes, and so on. It's often a laughable exposition of silliness.

But often it's not, and during the second half, the movie does indeed offer some big screams. Suspend disbelief for two hours, follow the story, and you might find yourself having a good time during Fright Night. The first half doesn't work. It lacks style, suspense, and intrigue, and the characters are not very interesting. The real scares find an outlet in the third act, and boy, will some of those scenes give me nightmares for a long time to come. Unfortunately, even with a man's flesh melting from his skeleton before our eyes, I wanted more from the film.

Fright Night Part II Review

OK
The original Fright Night is a mini classic of gore and gags -- so why wouldn't you follow it up with a sequel?

Fright Night Part II picks up three years later, after Charley (William Ragsdale) has been therapized into believing that vampires don't exist, which does him little good when the sister (Julie Carmen) of Chris Sarandon's vampire from Fright I, comes after him for vengeance. Soon enough Charley's turning vamp himself... so it's Roddy McDowall's vampire hunter to the rescue once again.
