British/South African movie TSOTSI was the surprise winner of the People's Choice award at Canada's Toronto International Film Festival on Saturday (17SEP05).

The movie about a Johannesburg gangster who steals a car and finds an infant in the back seat, beat the Finnish/Swedish film MOTHER OF MINE and such higher-profile entries as Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal's Brokeback Mountain and Kurt Russell and Dakota Fanning's DREAMER.

The People's Choice prize is often seen as an early indicator of Oscar nominations.
