Michael Showers, the American actor best known for his role on the HBO drama series 'Treme', has been found dead in the Mississippi River. The actor played the recurring role of Capt. John Guidry in the series about life in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, reports the Los Angeles Times.

Initial reports had suggested the body was that of a man who had jumped off a bridge earlier this week, but Louisiana state police identified the body as 45-year-old Mr Showers. Authorities have not yet given a cause of death, but confirmed the body was discovered floating off New Orleans French Quarter on Wednesday (24th August 2011). Although not a widely known actor, Michael had roles in 'The Vampire Diaries' and also appeared in Jim Carrey's comedy flick 'I Love You Phillip Morris', as well as the 2000 OSCAR winning drama 'Traffic'. His girlfriend told police the actor had gone for a drink on Tuesday but had not returned.

'Treme' has run for two seasons on Hbo and is scheduled to begin production on a third following strong reviews and high audience figures. The new season will air in the spring of 2012.
