The cast has been finalised for the upcoming music movie Jem and the Holograms; a reboot of the classic '80s kids cartoon about a record exec who moonlights as a pop star. Sharknado star Aubrey Peeples is playing Jem alongside Stefanie Scott ('A.N.T. Farm'), Hayley Kiyoko ('Lemonade Mouth'), and Aurora Perrineau, daughter of actor Harold Perrineau, will play the rest of Jem's band, The Holograms, as Kimber, Aja, and Shana according to THR.

Jon M. Chu will direct, Scooter Braun is producing and Ryan Landels has written the script for the live action adaptation of the colourful and fun-filled musical cartoon which was based on the 1980s Hasbro toy. Instead of having Jem as a record company owner slash pop star, the filmmakers have decided that Jem will be an orphaned teen named Jerrica who becomes an online recording sensation.

She and her band embark on a music-driven scavenger hunt that sends them on an adventure across Los Angeles in an attempt to unlock a final message left by her father. "[The Jem film is] for a whole new generation with themes of being true to who you are in a multitasking, hyperlinked social media age," the producers said when the film was first announced, according to E! Online.

The cast have been busily keeping fans up to date with the movie's music studio rehearsals and related hijinks but the first official teaser photo has now been released showing the four in character as the electro girl group. The deliberately tantalising shot is mostly coloured hair but introduces the main quartet and their respective roles.

Since the movie was announced on the 20th March, the production has been encouraging fan involvement throughout every step of the process, taking fan submissions for roles in the film and showing off fan-made art on its Tumblr. The new promo shot, which debuted on Tumblr, seems to be a fan reward for such devotion and excitement at this early stage in the movie.

Many fans of the franchise who remember the original series have rallied in support for the upcoming film and its newly-announced cast and a new section of mini-Jems have been attracted, drawn to the prospects of a movie lead by four strong and talented girls. However, it has been noted by some outlets that the band for some reason appears to be missing its Latina drummer, Carmen, from the main cast.

It's not known why she'd be missing or whether the movie makers are waiting for the right actress to come along to fill her space but not all the film's roles have been cast. There's still speculation over which actresses will be playing Pizzazz, Stormer, Roxy, and Jetta, AKA The Misfits: The Holograms' arch rivals on the music scene.

No casting decision has been announced for Rio Pacheco, Jem/Jerrica's purple-haired leading man who doesn't realize it's the same woman. Meanwhile, Ariana Grande, Kelly Osbourne, and Jordin Sparks are all rumoured to be attached.
