The Deal (2005) Review

Weak
It's an old adage that you "write what you know," which is very much the case here. First-time screenwriter Ruth Epstein is a 9-year veteran investment banker with Wall Street's Goldman Sachs. As a legal and financial negotiator, she knows mergers backwards. What she trips up on is translating the language of high stakes finance into intelligible drama.

Most of us couldn't tell the difference between a back-end hedge and a backhoe. So, when Delaney & Strong's hot shot investment banker Tom Grover (Christian Slater) is asked to manage a Russian oil company called Black Star in a $20 billion sale to Condor Oil & Gas, the technical details are about as clear as, well... a barrel of crude.

The Break Up (1998) Review

Terrible
Pedestrian thriller. Nonsensical and obvious why it went straight to cable, despite a decent cast of stars. What's with Weber's big moustache, anyway?

The Proposal Review

Weak
Jennifer Esposito (Summer of Sam) has a long way to go to reach the A-List if she keeps making direct-to-video pap like The Proposal. Ostensibly a crime thriller where the duplicity runs so thick you just don't know who to trust, The Proposal is really just a cut-rate cop drama with one too many arbitrary plot twists thrown in.

Esposito plays a sexy young cop assigned to help an undercover agent (a mousy Nick Moran) infiltrate a crime ring by posing as his wife. Uh-oh, the mob boss (Stephen Lang) is so devilishly handsome and dashing he puts the moves on the naïve Esposito! Meanwhile, Esposito has entered into a wholly unbelievable romance with the annoying-beyond-belief Moran, ultimately taking the film to an even more unbelievable resolution amidst the inevitable hail of gunfire.

Nobody's Baby Review

Weak
"When two escaped cons find an orphaned baby, their lives go from the state pen to the playpen...."

Whoa whoa whoa, hold it right there. How does Gary Oldman get involved with a con+baby movie!? I guess if you promise to get the film into Sundance (where it was originally exhibited), anything goes these days.
