Harry plays a solider called Alex in the film
When Christopher Nolan cast Harry Styles in his new World War II thriller Dunkirk, he had no idea he would spark a social media storm. "I don't think I was that aware of how famous Harry was," he admits. "I mean, my daughter had talked about him, but I wasn't really that aware of it. So the truth is, I cast Harry because he fit the part wonderfully and truly earned a seat at the table."
Harry Styles stars in Dunkirk
This is Styles' acting debut, as part of an ensemble that includes Tom Hardy, Mark Rylance and Kenneth Branagh. And he admits that he had no idea what to expect on the set. "It was amazing," he laughs. "The first surprising thing was the scale of the production. You walk on set the first day and get taken aback by everything. The movie is so ambitious! Some of the stuff they're doing in this movie is insane. I think whatever you imagine a giant film set to be like, this was very ambitious even by those standards. You know, the boats and the planes and the volume of bodies!"

Britain's epic 1940 evacuation of Dunkirk has been dramatised on film before, but no one has taken an approach like Christopher Nolan. Not that this is a surprise, since Nolan has made a career of fiercely inventive filmmaking. But this might be his masterpiece: a relatively simple story told with creative verve, relentlessly growing intensity, emotional resonance and the weight of history.
He recounts the events on three timelines. Over the course of a week, young soldier Tommy (rising star Fionn Whitehead) finds himself on the beach at Dunkirk amid 400,000 soldiers hemmed in from behind by the Germans and looking for some way to get across the Channel to England. But every ship he finds is sunk in front of him, or under him, as German pilots drop bombs from the sky. Meanwhile over the course of one day, English yachtsman Dawson (Mark Rylance) and his sons (Tom Glynn-Carney and Barry Keoghan) head off to do what they can as part of an armada of small civilian boats. And in the sky above over the course of an hour, spitfire pilot Farrier (Tom Hardy) engages the Luftwaffe in a series of aerial battles.
Nolan skilfully edits these three time-strands together into a narrative that continually loops back on itself, showing events from different angles. It sometimes feels a bit repetitive, but that's the point, and the result is increasingly resonant as it recounts the events from three internal perspectives. In the focal roles, Whitehead, Rylance and Hardy offer distinct angles on heroism and survival. These are powerfully engaging performances that reveal men merely doing what they can in seemingly impossible situations.

He appears on Chelsea for a quick-fire interview round.
Harry Styles reveals some unusual secrets about himself to Chelsea Handler on her Netflix show including what he uses to make his hair grow back so quick and his unusual biological quirk. He stars in World War II film 'Dunkirk', but it's not acting or even singing that's his biggest talent.
Harry Styles at the 'Dunkirk' premiere
Chelsea Handler met the former One Directioner on her new mononymous Netflix talk show this week, but didn't have time for a particularly involved interview. Thus, she gave him the rule of using only one word answers to her questions, though he couldn't keep it up the whole time.

Harry Styles believes 'Dunkirk' director Christopher Nolan helped him to act ''naturally''.
The 23-year-old singer come actor portrays soldier Alex in the World War II production and the One Direction band member believes the filmmaker helped him to react in the most instinctive way during filming for the production.

Christopher Nolan's World War II epic forced the actors into the 1940s soldiers' shoes.
The Battle of Dunkirk remains one of the most legendary and terrifying moments of the 20th century, and the cast of Christopher Nolan's World War II drama 'Dunkirk' got to experience just what that might have been like first hand thanks to the immense detail of the set.
Dunkirk is in theatres on July 20th
Director Christopher Nolan is well known for the astounding scope of his movies, and also that he never does big action scenes by halves. As it goes, 'Dunkirk' is very much one enormously intense action scene for the majority of the running time - and with real World War II spitfires flying around, thousands of extras and genuine explosions, acting wasn't necessary.
It's 1940 and World War II is in full swing. Allied soldiers from Britain, Belgium, Canada and France at stationed at Dunkirk ready to pull France from the grip of the Germans. However, they soon discover that they are completely surrounded by enemy forces who have them so trapped that they no longer have use for tanks. Confined in the open space of the Dunkirk beaches with nowhere left to hide and definitely nowhere to run, the soldiers face almost certain death as the air strikes begin. Their only hope is to sail across the English Channel to safety, but with enemy planes showing no mercy their survival will be miraculous. But these are allied forces aren't about to surrender, no matter what happens. Their courage and determination is about to save more than 300,000 men.

Can you believe the filmmaker didn't know how famous the singer was?
Apparently, being a thrice Oscar nominated filmmaker does not mean you are always completely up to date with all pop culture developments. In fact, Christopher Nolan barely knew who Harry Styles was before casting him in his first movie 'Dunkirk', and only really heard his name through the kids.
Harry Styles on the set of 'Dunkirk'
If you were wonderng whether or not the One Direction star won his role solely because he's super famous and would appeal to a young demographic, you'd be mistaken. Christopher Nolan, who wrote and directed forthcoming World War II thriller 'Dunkirk', insists that his focus was only on Harry's proficiency as the character of Alex.
Styles' stepfather Robin Twist passed away earlier this week following a battle with cancer.

Niall Horan has teased that his debut solo album will be ready later this year.
Niall Horan is hoping to drop his debut solo album ''later this year.''
The One Direction singer has received rave reviews following the release of his two singles 'This Town' and 'Slow Hands' and, although he can't wait to give fans more content, he's not ready to share his LP just yet as he's still coming up with a name.
Speaking on 'Lorraine', he said: ''I listen to a lot of 80s funk rock, and I started playing on the piano and that came up... and hopefully the album will be later this year. I'm still trying to come up with the name, we've only recently just finished recording it.''

The One Directioner released his self-titled album on 12 May
One Direction may have broken the hearts of fans worldwide when they took a "hiatus" in January 2016 but Directioners everywhere have been repeatedly treated to a bevvie of solo singles first. This time the man on top is Harry Styles who has just made history with his self-titled debut album.
Harry Styles' new album has topped all the charts
The album - which was released on May 12 - topped the Billboard 200 album chart with over 230,000 equivalent album units sold, making it the biggest debut sales week for a U.K. male artist’s first album in the US.

The singer returns to the music scene with his first collection of solo material.
Earlier this week, former One Direction boybander Harry Styles released his self-titled debut solo album, bringing fans a collection of new material, following on from his former bandmate Zayn Malik's 2016 record 'Mind of Mine'. Including his recent single 'Sign Of The Times', Styles allows his voice to command the LP, drawing on some big name influences with his debut and making an impression on those who listen.
Styles is back, but not as we know him
Zayn managed to snatch up some fantastic reviews upon his solo album's release, but how has Styles fared? He's certainly one of the more popular members of the 'X Factor'-formed band, but will that translate into solo success for the youngster?

I was hardly the right demographic for One Direction's oeuvre, so I was massively expecting, and perhaps hoping, to react to Harry's stylings with similar indifference, like that 'oh balls, here we go again' groan we all made when the recent election was called. But, damn his (lovely blue) eyes, he's turned out an eponymous debut album that's actually not half bad. 70s/80s-MOR-yacht rock though it may be (I'm sure the mid-size arena tour is already pencilled in), it's a credible attempt at shedding the 'boy' epithet, having shed the 'band' already, establishing his credentials as more grown up, more rounded - more 3D.
It strikes as a well-constructed collage of his favourite influences from bygone decades. Opener "Meet Me in the Hallway" typifies the recurring soundscapes of "Wish You Were Here"-era Pink Floyd. Brimful of ZZ Top, "Only Angel" gives us a moment of ponderous schlock, plucked straight out of the lyric recycling bin, that isn't an isolated incident on the album, lauding a girl who's a 'devil between the sheets'. Despite being a collaboration with Kid Harpoon, the composition process for "Sweet Creature" can't have gone much further than Styles and Harpoon playing the Beatles' "Blackbird" to each other, shrugging, then saying, 'Let's just do that'. It's not all uber-retro, though. As much as Rolling Stone mag lauds his 'Rod Stewart' vocals, he's much more Kelly Jones and sometimes Fran Healy, like on "From The Dining Table", sounding like a slower track from Travis' "The Man Who". "Carolina" cross-fertilises Beck and Stealer's Wheel ('steal' being the operative word when you catch onto the tune).
There's also that preposterous Harry Poppins video for "Sign of the Times", but the song itself couldn't be a stronger statement of intent - long (5.40), lushly arranged, soaring, emotive. Even its concept, that of a mother dying in childbirth, using her last five minutes to give her new-born vital life guidance, lands him on a different planet from dancing all night to the best song ever. "Meet Me In the Hallway" is also a boldly understated, brooding opening, carrying the theme of unsuccessful relationships that recurs many times thereafter. A couple of times, he seems like he might be over-sharing, or settling scores. Whereas "Kiwi" may not-too-cryptically evoke one ex-girlfriend, "Two Ghosts" has to be an answer to Taylor Swift's "Style". It's an understated Glen-Campbelly delight on an album where the efforts at tenderness succeed far more than the outbreaks of swagger.

The former 1D man is reportedly dating Tess, a food blogger and chef from London, according to The Sun.
Having recently said that his working life means it’s virtually impossible for him to maintain a relationship at the moment, Harry Styles is now romantically linked with London-based ‘Naked Diet’ chef / blogger Tess Ward, according to reports.
23 year old Styles, who is gearing up for the release of his debut solo album after putting One Direction on hold over a year ago, was first spotted with 27 year old Tess as they were driving around together in Styles’ Audi over the weekend, and the rumour mill has been spinning ever since.

In one of the biggest military disasters in British history, 400,000 soldiers found themselves stranded on the beaches of Dunkirk in France in 1940 in the midst of World War II. Their journey was about releasing the allied France from the grip of the Germans, but when they find themselves surrounded by enemy forces, with nowhere left to hide their options become limited. Determined not to surrender to the Nazis, an incredible emergency evacuation begins as bomb after bomb is dropped on the fleeing men. The Royal Air Force and British Navy vessels rush to the aid of their trapped troops, as well as boats from brave civilians, and together they manage to save over 300,000 men from the terrifying attack in Operation Dynamo.

The One Directioner released his debut solo single, Sign of the Times, last week
Harry Styles is the latest of the One Direction boys to have released a solo single and it seems for his legion of fans, it was very much worth the wait. However, his straight ascension to the number one spot in the chart may be hampered by a streaming site glitch.
Harry Styles has released his debut solo single to much applause
The singer released Sign of the Times on Friday (7 April) and thousands of fans rushed to praise his solo efforts on social media.
Styles told his friend Nick Grimshaw in a Radio 1 interview that his solo album and filming 'Dunkirk' have meant he's not had time for romance.
He’s been variously linked to the likes of Taylor Swift, Caroline Flack and Cara Delevingne over the years, but Harry Styles has now revealed that he hasn’t dated anybody in over a year, thanks to his hectic schedule as he prepares to launch his solo singing career.
The 23 year old One Direction singer has been comparatively quiet compared to his bandmates in the 16 months since the band officially went on their hiatus at the end of 2015. However, he revealed that virtually none of that time was spent on his love life, as he’s been too busy focussing on his solo album and his role in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming World War II epic Dunkirk.

The band’s website tricked fans into thinking they might be about to make a comeback.
One Direction fans thought the day they’d been waiting for had finally arrived yesterday, when an update on the band’s website seemed to suggest their hiatus was over. However it appears the fan’s celebrations were a little premature and there’s still no sign of when the band will be back. But they do have some new t-shirts.
One Direction aren't back…yet
It all started when the band’s official website added a ‘Future Events’ section, causing fans to immediately think that show announcements were imminent. Almost immediately fans on Twitter started freaking out and the hashtag #ThisIsNotTheEndOfOneDirection began trending.
The One Direction singer will make his acting debut in the Christopher Nolan drama.
If anyone thought that Harry Styles was cast in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming Dunkirk because of his star power rather than his acting skills, then you might be about to be proved wrong. Styles’ co-star in the film, Cillian Murphy, has come out in praise of the singer-turned-actor, saying he’ll be ‘terrific’ in the role.
Cillian Murphy thinks Harry Styles will be ‘terrific’ in Dunkirk
Speaking to the Radio Times Murphy said: "Harry Styles is great. I had very few scenes with Harry but we got to hang out and I've got to say he's a great, great kid, and really, really funny.”

But neither are Tom Hardy Mark Rylance, James D'Arcy, Kenneth Branagh and Cillian Murphy.
On Friday the first trailer for Christopher Nolan’s upcoming WWII epic Dunkirk dropped, showing us our first glimpses of the Dark Knight director’s first film since 2014’s Interstellar. But for some, Dunkirk is about something else entirely, because the film features the acting debut of One Direction’s Harry Styles.
Harry Styles filming Dunkirk
As usual when anything vaguely One Direction-y happens, their army of fans were out in force on social media and on Friday they weren’t happy. After being teased with photos of Harry and his new short hair filming scenes from the movie, the heartthrob was nowhere to be found in the just under a minute long trailer.
