Pork Chop Hill Review

Very Good
Gregory Peck, along with a host of then-unknowns, star in this Korean War melodrama, about the taking of an unimportant hill on the eve of the end of the war. According to the production notes, this film is absolutely true, and it paints a disappointing picture of the bureaucracy of the U.S. Army and what it will do to "save face." Good film but not exceptionally memorable 40 years after the fact.

The Five Pennies Review

Good
Louis Armstrong's appearance here -- as himself -- is The Five Pennies' real draw, though Danny Kaye, Barbara Bel Geddes, and the rest of the cast turn in admirable performances in this biopic of relatively obscure jazz trumpeter Loring "Red" Nichols. Nichols has quite the turbulent life story -- starting his own popular jazz combo (the titular Five Pennies) after pissing off every band leader in New York, only to have it all crash down on him when his daughter develops polio. During WWII he works as a shipyard laborer before bouncing back again for a bittersweet finale. While Kaye is perfectly fine in the lead, the story of Nichols just isn't on par with the life of some of music's greats. The combination of career self-destruction and simple bad luck are just a little too spurious to make for a classic movie.

The Enforcer Review

Weak
Dirty Harry #3 is undoubtedly the worst of the bunch, with Callahan chasing down a group of hippie radical terrorists, several years after the end of the hippie radical terrorist era. A few minor points for excellent use of such enormous area landmarks as Coit Tower, Alcatraz, and Tyne Daly.

Dirty Harry Review

Excellent
Well punk, do ya feel lucky? Dirty Harry Callahan blasted onto the San Francisco scene with a .44 Magnum and an attitude that launched a thousand imitators. Eastwood's most memorable character we get, a super-fascinating story maybe not so much. But the chase for murder and ransom-man Scorpio is at least a reasonably good one. The Dirty Harry films declined over the years, but the original's one worth seeking out.
