Happy Mondays frontman SHAUN RYDER sympathises with the drug addicted celebrities of today - because they receive much more media attention than he faced twenty years ago.

The 43-year-old former hellraiser is angered by the intense media speculation weathered by today's stars and insists he would have resorted to force if he had suffered the same levels of intrusion.

And he believes front page exposure hinders the recovery of troubled celebrities.

He says, "You've got to remember though, that we didn't have the paparazzi photographing us when we went to the pub at nine and came out at seven in the morning.

"Well, we had nothing to hide. If it got to be too much, we'd have just locked those b**tards in the boot of the car and dropped them off two days later.

"But these days, it's a different ball game, celebrity."
