Hank Williams Jr, the American musician who compared President Barack Obama to Adolf Hitler, has been dropped permanently by Espn. Williams' opening song to Monday Night Football was cut from the Colts-Buccaneers game last week, but the network has now made the decision to end its association with the country star , reports the New York Times.
The controversy began after Williams appeared on 'Fox & Friends', a morning show on the Fox News Channel. He criticised Obama and Republican House Speaker John Boehner for playing a round of golf together, saying it was like "Hitler playing golf with Netanyahu", referring to Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu. When the show's host claimed he didn't understand the comparison, Williams added, "I'm glad you don't, brother, because a lot of people do. They're the enemy: Obama! And Biden! Are you kidding? The Three Stooges" After deliberating over taking further action, Espn said on Thursday the singer's "Are you ready for some football?" anthem would no longer feature on their Monday Night show. In a statement, the network said, "We have decided to part ways with Hank Williams Jr. We appreciate his contributions over the past years". The country singer appeared to dispute being dropped on his website, saying, "After reading hundreds of e-mails, I have made my decision. By pulling my opening Oct. 3, you (Espn) stepped on the toes of the First Amendment freedom of speech, so therefore me, my song and all my rowdy friends are out of here".
A Republican supporter, Williams changed the lyrics to his song 'We Are Young Country' to 'This is Bush-Cheney Country' for the 2000 Presidential election.
