Legendary country singer/songwriter MERLE KILGORE died in Nashville, Tennessee, on Sunday (06FEB05) of congestive heart failure related to his lung cancer treatment. He was 70.

Kilgore famously managed Hank Williams Jr and penned a string of hits, including MORE AND MORE for WEBB PIERCE and WOLVERTON MOUNTAIN for CLAUDE KING.

But his most famous track was RING OF FIRE, which he co-wrote with one-time client JUNE CARTER CASH about her unrequited love for her future husband Johnny Cash.

The song sparked controversy, because it became one of Johnny's biggest hits and he believed Kilgore shouldn't have received credit for it, because it was June Carter's idea.

Kilgore is survived by his wife JUDY and five children.
