Haim picked up lots of tips from The Strokes singer Julian Casablancas when they toured with the band.
Guitarist and singer Danielle Haim played in The Strokes frontman's solo band when he toured and picked up lots of tips from him about the direction she should go in with her band, completed by sisters Alana and Este.
She told Q magazine: ''I think [the tour] was a huge turning point for us as because I got to see what really happens. I learned so much from Julian. I don't know if I can call him my mentor but he let me in on his writing process, and just gave me little tips of advice. I remember saying, 'I don't know what to do, we've played Los Angeles, where do we go from there? He said, 'Stop playing [live] write some songs and hit the ground running'. And that's exactly what we did. We made sure the recording we did was good enough.''
After Danielle returned from the tour, Este graduated from college and Alana from school and they set about putting the plan into action.
Este explained: ''From five o'clock on we were writing. And we tried to get something new each day, whether it was a chorus or a verse or just a thing to flex the writing muscle. And then we would sleep over, then leave really early the next day to go to work and then do it again the next day.''
