Filmmaker Guy Ritchie has branded his eight year marriage to pop superstar Madonna a "soap opera", but claims he nevertheless enjoyed the time they spent together. In a candid interview with Details magazine, the Sherlock Holmes director suggested the relationship was a "positive experience" overall, especially since they have an 11-year-old son Rocco.
Guy married the American pop singer at Skibo Castle in Scotland in December 2000, in one of the biggest weddings of the decade, with guests including Gwyneth Paltrow and Stella Mccartney. The couple's son was born earlier that year, and they later adopted a Malawian baby boy named David. Rarely out of the press, the couple eventually divorced in 2008, with Guy taking a reported divorce settlement of around $100 million. Speaking about the marriage, the director explained, "I enjoyed my first marriage. It's definitely not something I regret. The experience was ultimately very positive. I love the kids that came out of it, and I could see no other route to take. But you move on, don't you?" On the constant media interest, Ritchie said, "'I stepped into a soap opera, and I lived in it for quite a long period of my life. I'll probably be more eloquent on it 10 years from now". Having since moved on, the 43-year-old recently welcomed his second child with model girlfriend Jacqui Ainsley and spoke enthusiastically about raising his children, saying, "'I am anti-school. And I'm anti people putting so much pressure on kids and robbing their childhood by giving them so much homework. I think if kids want to arse around, then they should".
The second Sherlock Holmes movie 'A Game of Shadows', hits screens in the US and UK on December 16, 2011.
