Guillermo Del Toro's summer blockbuster Pacific Rim holds huge premieres in Mexico and London, while The Wolverine and RED 2 begin their own publicity assaults. And trailers tease us with glimpses of Jobs, Passion, Thanks for Sharing and more...
This week's big world premiere was for Guillermo Del Toro's Pacific Rim, which was held in Mexico City on Monday with cast members Charlie Day, Ron Perlman and Rinko Kikuchi. They were joined by British costars Idris Elba, Charlie Hunnam and new True Blood hunk Robert Kasinsky for the European premiere in London on Thursday. Critics' reviews are embargoed, but Emma Watson and Kanye West both tweeted praise for the film, which opens next week.
The next big blockbuster this summer will be The Wolverine, a stand-alone X-men movie set in World War II Japan. Hugh Jackman returns as the iconic character, and this week appears in a short behind-the-scenes doc with director James Mangold. They reveal several enticing clips from the film, which opens later this month. Watch The Wolverine featurette here.
We had a new trailer this week for the Steve Jobs biopic starring Ashton Kutcher. The film looks like a lively exploration of the Apple founder's career, from dropping out of university to his spiritual sojourn in India to the launch of the iPhone. Jobs premiered at Sundance in January and opens in America next month. Watch the Jobs trailer here.
RED 2 also opens this month, reuniting the cast of the comedy-thriller about "retired, extremely dangerous" ex-spies. Helen Mirren, Bruce Willis, John Malkovich and Mary-Louise Parker are all back, this time with Anthony Hopkins and Catherine Zeta-Jones. Looking almost eerily relaxed, Hopkins and Willis spoke to the press about how much fun it was to work together. Watch the interview here.
There's also a new trailer this week for Brian De Palma's twisty thriller Passion, starring Rachel McAdams and Noomi Rapace as businesswomen locked in a murderous revenge plot. A remake of the French thriller Love Crime, the film opens next month in the USA. Watch the Passion trailer here.
We had our first trailer for the sex-addiction comedy Thanks for Sharing, which stars Gwyneth Paltrow and Mark Ruffalo. Writer Stuart Blumberg (The Kids Are All Right) makes his directing debut on the film, which costars Tim Robbins, Josh Gad and Alecia Moore, better known as Pink. Released in September, it looks smart, funny and, yes, sexy. Watch the Thanks For Sharing trailer here. Watch the Thanks For Sharing trailer here.
And finally, we had our first glimpse of Black Nativity, based on the acclaimed stage musical by Langston Hughes. Starring Jennifer Hudson, Forest Whittaker, Angela Bassett, Mary J. Blige and Tyrese Gibson, it looks like a powerful exploration of current urban issues combined with some belting music. The film will open in time for Christmas. Watch the Black Nativity trailer here.
